Refined Elegance, Unrefined Execution: A Night at L’Carve

Stepping into the space formerly occupied by the legendary Pat’s, I arrived at L’Carve with high expectations. As a dedicated carnivore, I was eager to see if Yossi’s new venture could fill the void in the LA Jewish dining scene—a scene often plagued by a lack of consistency. The evening began with promise: a seamless reservation and a stunning interior. However, while the “show” was in full swing, the “substance” was still waiting in the wings.

The Service Paradox: Service devolved into a strange “feast or famine” rhythm. After an initial attentive burst, the staff vanished for long stretches. More concerning was the pacing; despite requesting separate plates for fish and meat, the kitchen launched a relentless “assault” of dishes. Plate after plate arrived without regard for table space. Delivering an entire meal’s worth of courses simultaneously isn’t fine dining—it’s a rush to the exit.

The Menu: The menu leans into theatrics at the expense of flavor and value. The Standouts: The Blue Fin Ultimate was fresh and delicate. The Seabass Tacos were decent, and the Butternut Squash Ravioli offered a comforting warmth. The Mid-Range: The Crispy Rice was fine, though the “DIY” assembly felt like a chore at this price. The Ribeye was tender but lacked depth, hindered by lackluster potato wedges. The Disappointments: Short Rib Bao Buns were tough and chewy. The Beef Tartar and Crispy Chicken Menbosha (with off-putting flavors) should be avoided. The Wagyu: I asked to skip the “theatrics,” but the meat stuck to the hot stone and didn’t live up to the Wagyu pedigree.

Final Thoughts: L’Carve is a beautiful venue, but being “out” of signature dishes by 8 PM suggests a management gap. At these prices, guests pay for precision, not just presentation. I’ll give them a few months to find their footing before returning.
