Eclectic, quaint, and excellent! Small town Pho that you order at the counter and it’s served to you at the table. My daughter and I got the shredded chicken in bone broth. Tiny bits of green onion, cilantro (on hers), basil, and hot peppers (if you want), with a fresh squeeze of lime was absolutely perfect. Highly recommend!

We visited it on a cloudy evening dinner. A nicer place located downtown. Simply decorated and priced moderately. Ordered two veggie pho and a summer roll. First time to try summer roll and it tasted good. One with a veggie broth and another one with bone broth. It was good that we were able to customize the broth. Pho could have been a little flavorful.

Tasty food that didn’t quite fill me up.

I walked here from my hotel which was great. The service was quick and the place was clean.

As you can see, the presentation is great. I ordered a large bowl of their #3 (steak, brisket, shank, buttery soft tendon and Vietnamese meatballs) and it tasted pretty good. The spices and other sides they include with the meal allow you to tailor the flavors to your preference.

That said, the meat was a little underwhelming and soggy, and the bowl, while it did have a lot of noodles, left mostly broth behind. That bowl was still half full of mostly salty broth when I finished, and I got hungry again walking back to the hotel.

Come eat here if you really like pho, but aren’t that hungry. I probably won’t be back.

I am sad to have to write this about a Vietnamese establishment, but the food here is not good.

The positive things I can say about this restaurant is that it brings food diversity to a small college town. I appreciate it representing Vietnamese culture but that is all the good things I have to say.

My acceptable rating for Phở is 6 out of 10. And To be blunt the Phở here is 4 out of 10. The broth is super bland with no flavors and No Salt! This is the first time in 10 years I had to add salt in my Phở because we were short on Hoisin sauce (tương Phở ).

Any Vietnamese my generation and up can make Phở (southern style) at home and the flavors at this restaurant is underwhelmingly below average. I have had Phở in most major cities in America, and even in places like Kobe, Japan. In terms of flavors, it is hard to find Phở broth below a 6 out of 10. For some reason the broth here tastes elementary and lacking in both flavors and richness.

Which brings me to the next point:

Where is the hoisin sauce and Sriracha(tương ớt )? I’m not sure if you forgot to pack it in our bag but for 3 Phở we did not get a single container of sauce.

The meat was decently good but Bell Peppers should Not be included in the meal! I see it all over VA with asian cuisines including bell peppers in meals that otherwise should not have it. I can ignore the lack of vegetables because it may be hard to get in this part of the country but Bell Peppers!? This is a First I have ever witness such heinous activities.

Also, we bought a bánh mì for $10!! I won’t complain about the price but just know it is more than doubled what it costs Nationally. Yet the taste is not exceptional. Again with the Bell peppers! For meat sandwiches we use BBQ meat like beef or pork, cold cuts with Pâte. For vegetarian sandwiches, we use fried tofu and stuff. There’s also butter and other things included but what we got here was “Americanize” version of bánh mì. It is a smaller baguette with non complimentary vegetable pairing.

In short:

I’m sad that I can’t recommend this place to any of my friends and family that crave authentic Vietnamese food because I honestly don’t believe this place is authentic at all. I don’t care if the owner is Viet or not but if you are trying to make the best quality Vietnamese food around then please take some of my advice:

Advice for Owner(s)
Phở : Cook the bones Longer By Starting In The Morning. Add more seasonings and about 20% more salt too. Include more broth in the meal otherwise the bowl becomes mushy.

Vegetables: remove Bell Peppers, please! Add more southeast Asian vegetables like coriander leaves and More Onions. No mushrooms too!

Meat: Don’t overcook the brisket.

Experience: Include the correct types of fresh vegetables, Hoisin Sauce, Sriracha, and finely grinded black and white peppers. Serve with Chopsticks and provide forks when requested, not the other way around. Audit your cooks and workers because I suspect they are ruining the taste of your food.

Other Considerations:

Don’t let a Northern Vietnamese tell you how Southern Phở is supposed to taste like. The North has its own version of Phở and that is not what is predominantly served in America due to the Vietnam War and the mass exodus of Southern Vietnamese. Not trying to start a war online but if you are going for Northern style then do that, if you are doing Southern then Do that!

I wish I can rank this place better but for all my Viets out there: come here if u are desperate for phở but imma have to give it a pass. Go further north to Harrisonburg for a better food experience.

Good luck Laughing Bird with the future improvements that I know you will make but until then we won’t be back. Reach out to me when you make some changes to your recipes and I will gladly return.

Wow! This was FANTASTIC pho. Some of the best I have ever had. I had the #1 and my husband had the #3. If you have never had pho, don’t be intimidated. They have everything explained for you! Great place. Will definitely come again. Fast and friendly service as well.

First time trying pho and nope I didn’t know how to pronounce it correctly! Lol thanks to the cashier who didn’t laugh at me..
I just got a great meal for only $10: taro boba tea and the shaved steak house special. It was PLENTY of food. The boba tea was excellent; not iced down too much and not too sweet!
I also appreciated the eco-friendly to-go containers.

Laughing Bird continues to be my favorite place for Pho! The broth is incredible and all of the flavors combined leave you quite satisfied. I reccomend the #3 if you’re the adventurous sort.

Adorable little restaurant, we tucked in here to retreat from the cold and found a warm and inviting place. We’re vegan so we had heard of this place before, we got two vegan phos, spring rolls (I think that’s what theyre called: rice paper filled with veggies), and tea. Everything was great, condiments in the fridge. We will certainly return.
