We went for dinner here for my birthday and I’m sorry we did. We didn’t make reservations, but went in as soon as it opened and got a table. The restaurant has a cool vide (old Victorian house with African decor). The staff were friendly, but not very helpful nor very attentive. Although it was winter, it was a warm day, the house was warm, and we had to deal with some flies inside. We ordered drinks and starters before we could order the mains as the restaurant was not open for dinner yet. My drink was flavorless (watery) and not very good. The starters were the star of the show. We had the burnt onion hummus and the whipped goat cheese and these were very delicious, but the pita bread they served these with was cold and stale. We ordered the chicken main and the waygu flat (steak) and the chicken was just spicy hot and the steak was chewy and tasted burnt. We could not finish either dish. We wanted this place to marvel us and it fell far short from it, so we won’t return.

I had high expectations for LATHA given the concept and atmosphere, but while the space delivers on vibe, the execution in the kitchen ultimately fell short.

Booked on OpenTable Chase Sapphire Reserve and so had an expectation of a great meal.
We arrived early and were seated at the bar, where Christian took great care of us. The caipirinha and rum punch were strong, well-balanced, and flavorful — easily the highlight of the evening. Live music added to the ambiance, with a vocalist delivering a solid Alicia Keys rendition. The décor is distinct and thoughtfully curated with African artifacts, creating a warm, stylish environment. Oscar, our server, was friendly and professional, and the co-owner stopping by to say hello was a nice touch.

Food

We opted for two pre-fixe three-course menus and added a few extras.
• Strawberry Palmista – A sweet, nicely balanced starter — essentially a strawberry salad with arugula, pecans, and walnuts. Simple but enjoyable.
• Salted Fish Escabeche with Plantain – Overly aggressive on salt. The plantain chips were fried properly and crisp, but the salt level overwhelmed the dish.
• Spinytail Lobster with Butter Sauce (+ caviar) – Disappointing. Three small chunks of lobster (with an $18 caviar supplement) arrived overcooked and rubbery. The pappardelle leaned slightly too al dente. For a premium add-on, this should have been a standout course.
• Tamarind Chicken Wings (extra order) – We added these because the pre-fixe portions felt light. The wings were fine texturally but lacked seasoning internally; flavor was primarily surface-level.
• Chocolate Melk Tart – Chocolate-forward and enjoyable at first bite, but skewed too sweet with honey and caramel. A thicker tart shell or more pastry would have helped balance the richness.

Overall Assessment

For $370 (including tip) for two cocktails, two pre-fixe menus, a small caviar add-on, and an order of wings, the value proposition simply doesn’t align with the culinary execution.
• Value: ★☆☆☆☆
• Taste: ★★☆☆☆
• Effort / Decor / Service: ★★★☆☆

LATHA delivers a beautiful room, strong cocktails, and good energy. However, at this price point, seasoning balance, proper cook on proteins, and portion integrity must be dialed in. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I wouldn’t return.

AMAZING!
Took our mother for dinner, we enjoyed it so so much!
Sitting outside was lovely, and the music added to the ambiance.
Our favourite dishes were the shrimp starter, the goat cheese dip, and the oxtail entrée.
Great cocktails and mocktails too! Impeccable service!

We started with the Whipped Goat Cheese, which was beautifully presented, and we really liked the mildly savory cheese with the honey and the accompanying chapati. I think it was a touch too sweet though, and the black garlic component was overshadowed. The Honey Hot Wings had a nice heat level and great crisp on the skin. For the mains, we began with the Pineapple Piri Piri Chicken and while I loved the seasoning and cook on the chicken, I wasn’t a fan of the labneh being layered beneath the surprisingly mild jollof rice. We also got the Lamb Tajine which we enjoyed with the spiced curry and pickled onions. The best dish of the night was the Chocolate Brigadeiro Torte for sure. Super well balanced, not too sweet, and the mousse made for a perfect bite with the chocolate and whipped cream.

The food was AMAZING. We went back within 4 days to try more things on the menu. The food was full of flavor. The atmosphere was classy and a total vibe. The service was great and all of the staff were welcoming and helpful. The owner was lovely and kind. I will certainly be back and highly recommend!

The food was excellent and the service was incredible. Peri Peri was a bit more fruity and less spicy than my preference but had excellent flavors. The curried lamb was very good but the hangar steak with black garlic was phenomenal. We literally spoke about how good the bread was that came with the burnt onion hummus the whole drive home. It seemed like everyone there was celebrating a birthday and I can see why. Don’t be afraid of the avocado crema on the chocolate torte. It sounds weird but it paired very well. The guy behind me was raving about his oxtail so we will have to try that next time. Can’t wait to go back.

And the food was on point! Creative and delicious. We got the goat cheese, peri peri wings, oxtail and lamb. All were amazing!

All I can say is wowwww! This was a wonderful experience top to bottom. My colleagues and I were all raving before, during, and after the meal about the service and especially THE FOOD! Chef Digby Stridiron introduced himself to the table and gave us the overview of his culinary inspirations, and it was inspirational. The pan African flavors were INCREDIBLE and you can taste his passion coming through the food. We had the wing platter, with 3 different flavors. These were THE BEST wings I’ve ever had, and I don’t often proclaim things as “the best”. These wings were indeed the best, hands down. Pictured is my entree…a delicious porkchop and a side of joloff rice. So flavorful and delicious, and not only that, it was exciting. Service was so stellar, and we felt very well taken care of. Jasiri (spelling?) was an impeccable server, and we appreciated his story telling around the menu. Again, top to bottom, 10 out of 10 recommend! You simply MUST try Latha

We had plans at the Science Center so I was looking for something close and new to try and thought this looked like fun. I did make reservations and had the option to share it was for a birthday and when we were seated there was a sign in the table saying Happy Birthday. While we were waiting for the whipped goat cheese (which was amazing) they presented the birthday boy with a bracelet with his African name and shared the meaning of his name (Kopi, giver of life). He went for the Oxtail Barbacoa and a side of brussel sprouts and I had the Lamb Groit (the couscous had a delightful kick). For dessert we were treated to pound cake for dessert which was a perfect ending to a wonderful experience. We definitely plan to go back because there is more in the menu I want to try. I highly recommend adding this place to the top of your next place to try list.
