Las Espuelas (4306 228th St SW)

This casa at Cedar Plaza has been here for many years. It’s family-friendly, happy, and welcoming.

When my wife and I came for dinner, almost all the tables were taken. We sat down and immediately ordered the house margarita and shared a plate of steak fajitas.

While waiting, I looked around to soak everything in.

There were two saddles nestled on the ceiling beams. The walls were adorned with paintings of cowboys and horses and dusty trails. In fact, “Las Espuelas” means “the spurs” in Spanish, a nod to Western life.

Music played in the background. I knew not one word of what the singers were singing, but I could tell by the plaintive melody that they spoke of love and life in the most emotional tones. A busser said what I was hearing was ranchera music. I learned something new today.

I spotted a toddler in a high chair saying, “Mingo! Mingo!” Pretty soon, the owner of the restaurant, named Domingo, came moseying down the aisle. A silver-haired man with broad shoulders and a stern visage, Domingo doesn’t look like the type of guy anyone would mess around with. But when he reached the toddler, Domingo bent down, smiled at the child, and made a funny noise like an airplane swooping down. The toddler roared with delight.

When our drink arrived, it was tremendous. My wife said, “Goodness gracious, this thing weighs like five pounds!” I took a few sips for the sake of experiencing the moment. I took a few more sips because it was darn good.

The steak fajitas came sizzling on a plate. The roasted onions and bell peppers were perfectly matched with the smoky loveliness of the thin cuts of beef.

After a couple of servings, I said I’d had enough. But I had a couple more afterward.

We vowed not to take home a doggy bag, and we accomplished that goal.

When it was time to leave, there was a line at the front. This place is popular.

If you want to come here, better saddle up early. Mingo will be waiting.

Las Espuelas is the kind of place that quietly earns your loyalty. Tucked into Mountlake Terrace, it offers a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels like a neighborhood favorite where families gather, friends reconnect, and newcomers are welcomed with genuine hospitality.

The vibe is relaxed yet polished. Soft lighting, clean tables, and subtle décor create a space that’s both cozy and festive. It’s the kind of setting where you can linger over a meal without feeling rushed, and the background music adds just enough energy without overpowering conversation.

The staff here are exceptional and attentive without hovering, friendly without being scripted. You get the sense they truly care about your experience. Water glasses stay full, plates arrive promptly, and every interaction feels sincere. It’s rare to find service this consistently excellent.

We ordered two combo plates that showcased the kitchen’s strengths:

#10 Combo: One chile relleno and one enchilada, served with rice and beans. The chile relleno was perfectly roasted, with a delicate crunch on the outside and a rich, cheesy center. The enchilada was generously sauced and packed with flavor.

#3 Combo: Two enchiladas with shredded beef and a beef tostada plus rice and beans. The shredded beef was tender and well-seasoned, while the ground beef enchilada had a satisfying, savory depth. The rice was fluffy, the beans creamy, and everything arrived hot and fresh.

The house margarita was a pleasant, surprise smooth, balanced, and not overly sweet. It paired beautifully with the meal and felt like a treat without being overindulgent.

Las Espuelas isn’t flashy, it’s dependable, delicious, and deeply welcoming. Whether you’re craving classic Mexican comfort food or just want to enjoy a well-made margarita in a friendly setting, this spot delivers. It’s the kind of place you return to not just for the food, but for how it makes you feel.

If you are in need of a restaurant that features authentic Mexican cuisine look no further! Every dish was well portioned and presented well on plates. The food was fresh and full flavored. The service on a busy Sunday night was world-class. Our server, Magdalena, was friendly knowledgeable, attentive and fast. Great salsa, best guac in Washington and something on the menu for everyone. Family friendly and has lots of parking!

Wow! I wish I lived closer because this place was fantastic! Incredibly friendly staff, our server Maria was great, and some of the best Mexican food in Washington. We ordered 2 combo plates and loved everything: relleno, chimichanga, chicken enchilada with verde sauce. The margaritas were delicious too! We will make a point to stop here anytime we are in the area.

Delightful experience! Absolutely great food! Excellent customer service!! We showed up with a group of 19 after my son’s graduation from UW, and as busy as they were, they accommodated all of us promptly. Had a great dinner. I definitely recommend you pay them a visit.

I love this place. I came here on my birthday and I had a great time. I live right up the street. This is the restaurant of choice for my family. My cousin’s grandmother is the owner of a pretty famous Mexican restaurant in Phoenix Arizona, and I like to think that I know a thing or two about Mexican food. I love it. Definitely come here it’s great.

I don’t normally write reviews but this place is amazing. It has attentive and friendly service — we never had to ask for chip or water refills — and the food came out relatively quickly for the amount we ordered (5 people, 1 dish per person.) I was originally hesitant about the price since I rarely eat out, but the portions are HUGE; even our big eaters could split theirs into at least two meals. It’s well worth the money.

It’s also got a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We went on a Sunday evening and the place wasn’t too full, and we were instantly seated. Now excuse me… I’m going to be enjoying my taquitos for the next few days.

We went in here for a late lunch. They have a great lunch menu and you can still order full entree items. I had the Chilli Verde. It was full of flavor and the meat was tender and delicious. The rice and beans were excellent! The chips and salsa came with pico. The place is well decorated and inviting. Loved it and will definitely return!

I was wondering why there were SO many high ratings for this restaurant so we went and were not disappointed!

Food and service were fabulous. A great selection from the menu and the drinks are fun and have such variety.

We went Saturday night and they were busy which was great to see. Food came fast and they were very attentive to filling our water and anything else we needed.

They have inside and outside seating with lots of parking.

First time here. Would come back. Salsa served with chips was amazingly tasty. We ordered Carne Asada, burrito and Tamales from the lunch menu. All were generous portions and tasty. Would recommend. Will come back.
