To start, reservations are needed. We have yet to just walk in but this place is busy. We were seated quickly and were brought bread and water, with the drink order taken. Great bloody Marys here. I had shrimp and grits on e and a Cajun dish the second time we were there. Both excellent! Staff is great and great parking too. Highly recommend.

We finally made the 45-minute drive to Lafayette on the Square after hearing so many great things—and it absolutely lived up to the hype.

We went on Valentine’s Day and chose the four-course meal. We split the truffle fries and fried oysters to start—both were exceptional. I mean, how can you go wrong with truffle anything?

I had the roasted garlic and bell pepper soup in a tomato base. It looked thick but had a light consistency and was bursting with flavor without being too heavy. My wife had the salad with the famous honey jalapeño dressing, and it was just as good as we remembered.

For entrées, I took a chance on the 1886 lasagna (shrimp allergy limited my options), and I’m glad I did. The vodka sauce was outstanding—easily one of the best lasagnas I’ve ever had. My wife, who has over 10 years of restaurant experience, agreed. She ordered the shrimp and scallop scampi and loved that it leaned heavier on the scallops. She said it was delicious.

We finished with molten lava cake and red velvet cheesecake— not homemade, but a perfect sweet ending.

We’re excited to see this Cajun-style spot doing well and can’t wait to go back. 10/10. Worth the drive.

The food was really good. The service was nice. Atmosphere was low key during the week for supper. It is expensive, but the portions definitely provide extra and make up for the price. You get what you pay for!

**Restaurant Review: A Cajun-American Gem Worthy of the James Beard Spotlight**

If you’re searching for a culinary experience that marries soulful Southern comfort with elevated Cajun flair, look no further than this standout Cajun-American restaurant—an absolute revelation that deserves serious James Beard Award consideration.

### **Juicy Pork & Flavorful Succotash**
The pork here is a masterclass in slow-cooked perfection. Each bite is impossibly tender, bursting with smoky depth and a subtle spice that lingers just long enough to make you crave the next forkful. Paired with a vibrant succotash—sweet corn, creamy lima beans, and a whisper of heat—it’s a dish that feels both rustic and refined.

### **Cajun Pasta That Redefines the Genre**
Forget everything you thought you knew about Cajun pasta. This version is bold, creamy, and unapologetically rich, with just the right kick of cayenne and paprika. The sauce clings lovingly to every noodle, and the generous chunks of blackened chicken or shrimp (your choice) are seasoned to perfection. It’s the kind of dish that makes you close your eyes and savor.

### **Kid-Friendly, Adult-Approved**
Even the kids’ menu is a triumph. The hand-breaded chicken tenders are golden, crispy, and juicy—clearly made with care, not pulled from a freezer. The fresh-cut fries are a revelation: crispy on the outside, pillowy inside, and seasoned just enough to keep little hands reaching for more.

### **Crème Brûlée Cheesecake: A Dessert Dream**
And then there’s the dessert that steals the show: the crème brûlée cheesecake. Imagine the silky elegance of flan and the rich decadence of cheesecake having a lovechild. The caramelized sugar crust cracks like a dream, revealing a custard-like interior that’s impossibly smooth and subtly sweet. It’s the kind of dessert that makes you rethink what cheesecake can be.

### **Final Thoughts**
This restaurant doesn’t just serve food—it tells a story of heritage, heart, and culinary ambition. Every dish is crafted with intention, and the flavors are bold, balanced, and unforgettable. If the James Beard Foundation is listening, this place deserves a seat at the table!

Absolutely terrible. This is the second time I’ve been here. The first time was the day before Valentine’s Day. Tonight, I ordered Fettuccine Alfredo with no broccoli. Came out with Broccoli, no big deal, I sent it back and it came back about a minute later come to find out they just “picked it out” and brought it back to me. There are still little pieces of it in there. I send it back again and they do the same thing, pick it out and bring it back. Definitely not how things should be ran. They should have remade it in the beginning. After that, I just said I didn’t want it. Fries came out cold and undercooked, they took it back and re-fried it and sent back out. I really thought by the vibe and looks of this place I was going to have a very nice dinner, well I was wrong. I will not be going here again. It’s a shame, sadly I don’t think this place will make it.

I had a wonderful planned date with my wife a couple weeks ago. We went in and it was very busy. We didn’t have a reservation so we felt terrible for the young hostesses who had to find us a spot. They were wonderful despite the lack of help from any of the other staff or bartender who wasn’t even talking to customers or tending the bar. That aspect of the service disappointed me because of those poor girls that were working their butts off with very little help from the staff. I believe they are hosts, busboys and maids for the business as I saw one of them sweeping after a child had left. That disappointed me because I stopped the pretty little brunette and asked her how old she was and if she was going to school at central. She was the sweetest thing and said “I’m 15 and a freshman at the high school!” I wondered how she could look so happy after doing something gross like cleaning up half chewed food out of an high chair. Nonetheless she did it with speed and I applaud her for it. Anyway we finally get sat by the younger host and I order the gumbo. The waitress came out and gave me a dirty soup spoon (It LITERALLY had BUTTER on it). After I quietly told the waitress about that, she went to the back for half a second and
came right back. She just wiped the spoon off on her apron. I could tell by the speared butter on her fingertips and residue on the apron itself. She told us her name was “Moira” if that helps narrow that down. Someone needs to have a talk with that poor girl. I ordered my steak rare and it was burnt and tasted like a tire. I thought that the back porch tea was okay but it didn’t have any wow factors. I ordered desert for me and the Mrs. to share and it was the only part of the dining experience I enjoyed. Come to find out it wasn’t even made in house. This restaurant is a joke. If I were you I wouldn’t waste your time at this filthy slop that google calls a restaurant.

The best option in the area and the continuation of a local tradition. Lafayette is the revival of Emmett’s, which operated for many years across the square.

Lafayette picks up where Emmett’s left off, and has even improved in many ways. The menu is large, the portions are generous, and the flavor and quality are both excellent.

The service is great (although it often gets busy and can be a bit slow, so I would make a reservation). The new space is spacious with nice views into the square, and is well decorated with local art.

Absolute perfection. The ambiance, the food, the service… incredible! And the price was more than reasonable for this experience. I was with a party of 4 and we were all in awe of this place. We made the drive from Columbia and will definitely be coming back!

Place looks great and was quite busy. Unfortunately the food definitely didn’t like up to expectations.
Apps: Onion Rings: OK. Dirty Fries: OK. BBQ shrimp: big problem. Shrimp was noticeably not fresh. Also, a sauced shrimp dish with the shells left on? Also shrimp were overcooked, a cardinal sin in my eyes.

Gumbo:tastes like it was done by someone who has heard about creole cooking and thinks they can try this. (I’m from the deep south and know what fresh shellfish should taste like. Also what gumbo tastes like)

Entrees: fish and chips with a huge mound of fries upon which perched a single piece of fish.Fish was pretty good

Scallops: four tiny scallops on a bed of orzo heavily seasoned with capers

Dessert: we didn’t even try.

Wonderful experience . Lots of potential. Reuben fantastic, the basket of dinner bread is excellent, and the Purdy Big Salad yummy and fun. Just a few niggles to work on, in my opinion. The French fries could be crisper. The Catfish Po Boy, well I think some the fish got away before making it onto the sandwich. The Shrimp and Gritz came with only four, smaller sized shrimp??? The grits were slightly runny, but did have good flavor. The Jambalaya had so much added dry spice it overwhelmed the entire dish. Very skimpy on the Holy Trinity, it needed more onions, celery and peppers, preferably yellow, orange and red. Yes, I know green peppers are less expensive, but the other colors kick that dish up a notch. Too much boring Andoulle sausage. Needs more shrimp and chicken. Ordered a bowl of Gumbo, but it never arrived? It was removed from the bill. Line of sight, from certain angles when the bathroom doors are opened you can see people doing their business, especially the men’s room.
Overall, a nice dining experience and well worth the beautiful drive from Columbia. We will return.
