The bluefin toro roll was my favorite — so smooth! All of the raw fish rolls were fresh and tender.
The ikura was quite salty, so I saved some to eat with other rolls, which generally weren’t seasoned.
Around 6 rolls per person was a filling meal.
Compared to Matsunori, Lab 13 has less of a wait and has discounts for sets (individual roll prices are similar). Lab 13 also doesn’t have the more elaborate premium rolls that Matsunori has (the botan ebi ikura has my heart). Still, I think it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Clean, cozy with amazing food and great service. I’ve been here twice with friends and had a great time both visits. Loved the house-made soy sauce and pickled ginger! The chef was so kind, when I mentioned I felt cold after coming in from outside, he offered hot tea right away. Truly felt like 5-star service. We will be back soon 🙂
Not many hand roll spots around Boston, so when this place popped up, I knew I had to check it out. Since they don’t take reservations, I was a little worried about lines on a Friday evening, but there were still a few seats open when I arrived.
The setup reminded me of those budget omakase bars in NYC. Clean, minimal, with a counter wrapping around the kitchen. Turnover was quick, and even without tables, there were plenty of families with kids, which gave it a relaxed vibe.
Menu-wise, they offered standard hand roll sets and a slightly pricier “Chef’s Special” omakase. From experience, sticking with the basics usually pays off. The 6-piece set ($38) covered all the essentials (toro, lobster, eel, scallop, etc). Portions were fair, nothing tasted off, and everything was clean and fresh.
Honestly, just surprised they chose Newton instead of Boston. Probably a liquor license thing, but still, hand rolls this good feel like they belong downtown (or at least Cambridge or Brookline).
The space is intimate, with just 17 bar seats, which I honestly loved. Sitting at the bar made the whole meal feel interactive and special. I got to watch the handrolls being made right in front of me, and everything looked incredibly fresh and precise. There’s something about that up-close view that makes you appreciate the craft even more.
What really stood out to me was the value. For the quality and freshness of the fish, the pricing felt more than fair. Each handroll was perfectly balanced–the rice was warm and seasoned just right, the nori had that ideal crisp snap, and the fish was buttery and flavorful. Every bite tasted clean, fresh, and thoughtfully put together.
The combination of great taste, fair pricing, and that cozy 17-seat bar setup makes Lab 13 feel like a hidden gem. I left completely satisfied and already looking forward to my next visit. I really enjoyed the set menu and liked the snow crab and bluefin tunaI recently had the chance to try Lab 13 Handroll Bar, and it was such a great experience from start to finish.
