Before you even step through the door at La taverne a Bacchus, la Monèze Haute Limoux, you get the sense that this is not going to be your average lunch. The parking lot greets you with free-roaming chickens scratching around your tires, a boar rustling in the nearby brush, and just to make sure you are really paying attention, a regal peacock standing sentry beside a bathtub like itis the most natural thing in the world. It is whimsical, a little wild, and entirely fitting for the kind of meal that follows.

What unfolded was a three-hour stretch of uninterrupted eating and drinking… The kind of lunch that dissolves the concept of time. It began with a deeply comforting soupe paysanne, hearty and full of soul, followed by a generous charcuterie board layered with homemade foie gras, pâté de campagne, and an unctuous, deeply flavored pâté de foie de volaille.

For the mains, we had the magret de canard which was carefully roasted in the open cheminée, its skin perfectly crisped, smoky and tender. I went full traditional with a tartiflette that was unapologetically rich, bubbling with melted cheeses, and jambon indulgent in the best possible way.

And just when we thought we could not possibly eat more, dessert arrived like a final, elegant flourish. A boozy, golden limoncello baba and a classic île flottante, airy, cloudlike meringue floating on a pool of crème anglaise, nostalgic and perfect.

The ambience inside hits that rare sweet spot between rustic, quirky and refined. The service and hospitality are both incredible.

If you ever find yourself in Limoux, hungry for something unpretentious yet memorable, La Taverne À Bacchus is well worth a detour.

This is an amazing restaurant for so many reasons. First and foremost the food is excellent. Their are different priced menus containing different mains of the day but you probably can’t go wrong with any of them. We went for a menu of the day and the next one up which didn’t include foie gras. We’d wondered if that might have been a mistake but it certainly wasn’t and we were nice and full and had two completely different meals. I think before I go any further if you are vegetarian or vegan this is NOT the place for you as it is all about the meat. The starter of charcuterie was brilliant with the chefs homemade pate and pate de tête that normally if never have chosen but it was delicious. For mains we had duck breast and stuffed veal which were both brilliant. Desert was good too.

The next thing to say is the staff were really friendly and very helpful. We hadn’t booked (make sure you get there early if you haven’t) but they managed to squeeze us in and were really attentive and helpful.

The restaurant decor is really unusual but really playful and fun and gave a really nice atmosphere for dinners. I won’t try and describe it as I think it’s best experienced.

Lastly the restaurant was very well set up for little ones. They had a microwave you could use for warming food multiple types of highchairs/seats and were very accommodating.

All in all I can highly recommend going here for a meal and whatever you choose I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

A restaurant in an lovely external setting. Go there hungry because the portions are generous! Not ideal for vegetarians as far as I could tell from the choice of menus. Great service and unusual internal setting.

Amazing place! Can’t recommend it enough. The set menu is perfect and very good value at lunchtime during weekdays. Booking is recommended—it was full when we visited.

We love it. There is a €25 lunch (noon-2pm on weekdays) for 3 courses and an individual carafe of wine (or €30 for the 3 course grill). The rural setting is spectacular and in the summer the shaded terrace is a lovely place to enjoy lunch. The apéro is often an amazing charcuterie plate, mozzarella and tomato plate or gazpacho. The meat is locally reared and expertly cooked. Not suitable for pescetarian/ vegetarians diners; it’s a meat feast. My sister loved the salted caramel crepe! It’s very popular so a good idea to book.

What an amazing restaurant. Great food and wonderful character. We just had a special menu du jour with red wine, charcuterie plate, large grilled duck breast with roast potatoes, crepes with fig and Chantilly cream, and coffee for only 25 Euro! Special lunch on weekdays only. Delicious. The building is a wine chateau festooned with interesting objects. The staff are enthusiastic and lovely.

We went for dinner during our vacation and had a mixed experience. The meal started off strong with a delicious onion soup. After that we had more charcuterie than we knew what to do with, followed up by another meat centric dish. The meat was cooked well, but it seemed like that was 90% of our meal. The dessert was also not good, my girlfriend got the pineapple carpaccio and it looked and tasted not fresh and not good.
