We came here on high recommendation from the business we were just at. Sadly, we were disappointed in several areas.
Chips and salsa are not free. (That’s more of a FYI.) I get that not all places do that but the ones we have been to, do.
We had a hard time getting service from our waiter and waitress – we flagged the other down when we weren’t getting service. Neither spoke good English so we struggled with getting questions answered and the bill question. The queso was small for the price. The fajitas did not taste good. They were edible but even if we returned we would not try them again. I don’t know if it’s the same meat in their tacos or other dishes but we won’t chance returning to check it out.
Also, it’s a 20% gratuity automatically added for 5 or more patrons. (It’s listed on their receipt.) But with the way their service is, it certainly isn’t worth 20%. I don’t recall if they charge for using a credit card or not. It’s been a while since we were there and I think that was a “lost in translation” question.

I’ve passed by this place many times, but today I decided to stop in and try the food. Let me tell you, I was not at all disappointed! I went with the chile verde, which was delicious and came with generous portions of perfectly cooked rice and refried beans. You also get a choice of salsas that truly remind you of home with their flavor. I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m in town!

Got a pickup order and the beans were spilled all over the takeout box…like it was leaking out of the sides of the box. Also I feel like it just makes it impossible to eat street tacos when there’s beans all over them and I can’t taste anything else. There was also onion skin in my tacos lol. The food was decent otherwise but just disappointing.

If you’re looking for some seriously delicious tacos in a casual, no-fuss spot, La Regia Taqueria is a must-try! My fiancé and I sampled nearly every type of taco on the menu, and the specialty fajita tacos were a standout—packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. The lengua taco was another highlight, tender and full of authentic goodness.
We visited on a weekday night and found plenty of space to sit, making it a great option whether you’re dining solo, with a small group, or bringing a big crew. The service was friendly and laid-back, adding to the overall chill vibe. Another cool perk? The attached grocery store, which is perfect if you want to grab some authentic ingredients to take home.
Their strawberry margarita was decent and paired well with the meal. Pricing is reasonable, making this a fantastic spot for a high-quality yet quick-ish bite—definitely not as fast as fast food, but way more relaxed than a full sit-down restaurant.
Would absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re craving solid, flavorful tacos in a casual setting! We will be back!

Nice and homey. Quiet enough to have a conversation without shouting.
Good portion for the price.
Your girlfriend may not be impressed but your wallet will.

Carne asada tacos were surprisingly dry and bland on the other hand the chorizo tacos were flavorful but overly greasy and wet. The horchata was pretty decent but had to much ice and needed a sprinkle more cinnamon they also don’t have unlimited soft drinks but charge you the same price of a soft drink for a 12 ounce can of your choice of drink. The rice was very very bland and might as well have been white rice. The menu was very selective and didn’t have much variety. They charge $6 for chips and salsa and you get about a handful of small chips. The chips and salsa were the size of something I would buy at a high school basketball game. The total was around $60 and I’d say it was worth about $26. Overall the service was not bad just not anything to remember. I would not eat here again.

Food is good but I don’t like that Everytime I order delivery now they don’t send chips and salsa anymore like they use to with my meals and I don’t like how they try to upscale you on things like I was gonna buy a beverage which didn’t have any prices. I asked how much they are and it’s way overpriced. She literally made up her own price. All the beverages. I went nextdoor to their store and bought the same one I wanted and it was half the price the lady tried to charge me.

Ordered a sope with ground beef, Gordita with steak, goat birria, French fries and beans and rice. Family loved the birria. My sope would have been great had the ground beef been seasoned better. The godita is a soft light colored one which I like the crunchy kind. But it was ok. The steak filling was pretty good. Beans were bad and the rice was ok. Good menu, good portions.
Would go back to try other items menus and for the goat birria.

Best Mexican food in Iowa City. The meat choices set it apart from the rest of the field. Try the beef cheek tacos. Tasty sauces at the table but no complementary chips and salsa. Not the largest portion sizes if you’re looking for an ultra feast but the authentic quality of food makes it an outstanding choice.
