We were struck by how quiet it was—only one other table was occupied. The “birthday surprise” did little to lift the mood, feeling rushed with no candle, atmosphere, or even a name on the plate.
The food was a letdown. Excessive saltiness dominated every dish, masking the natural flavors and creating a disjointed, even bitter, experience.
Service was mixed. While staff were attentive in some ways, we were unpleasantly surprised to find a charge for the cheese plate we weren’t clearly told was an add-on.
By the end of the night, the mystery of the empty dining room was solved. Our experience perfectly explained the lack of crowd. It’s clear why this place isn’t busier. We won’t be returning.
We went and had the seven course tasting menu.
I must say that the service was impeccable. The waiter so was attentive, although as there was only myself my husband and two other people in the entire restaurant that probably wasn’t a taxing shift for him.
The only thing that let the meal down was… the food.
We started with Bread and butter, the butter was salted butter and didn’t have a particularly creamy flavour. It was an average butter on some Bread.
Next an amuse-bouche, it was a cauliflower and blue cheese concoction although you couldn’t taste the blue cheese due to the overwhelming saltines of the dish.
The parsley oil was an interesting touch, but it appeared that the chefs rule was when in doubt salt it out.
Next we had the scallop dish the scallops were cooked reasonably well, not the best I’ve had, but okay.
The sauce however had chunks of cucumber and apple in a honey mustardy sauce and all of those flavours completely overwhelmed the taste of the scallops, in my humble opinion if you order a scallop dish, you should probably be able to taste the scallops and not have it drowned out by some strange French interpretation of McDonald’s burger sauce.
The rabbit came next again the meat had been cooked in a way so it fell apart with the slightest touch, very tender, but the sauce had more salt in it than a Scotsman‘s porridge!!!
Next in our culinary journey was the monkfish again the meat was cooked well, but the pumpkin seem to be un ripe and cremated on one side and once again the sauce had more salt in it than the dead sea.
We had requested the venison instead of the beef. We then later discovered this was the wrong decision. I don’t know how he managed to make a beautiful piece of venison meat taste like liver but he did.
The slice of quince or at least that what we think it was, was also cremated on one side and the thin crisps of I don’t know what that was rested above the black pudding just tasted burnt and oily.
To be fair, the desserts that we had and the additional cheeseboard were nice
the bowl that the mango sorbet was delivered in annoyed me because it kept rolling over and wouldn’t stand upright which that is more a case of form over function, and considering that the Tonka bean is banned in America for its toxicity, it didn’t really add much to the chocolate desert either.
Then the thing they do to show that it is a birthday meal instead of just a normal fleecing, is they present you with a plate that has happy birthday written in chocolate and two small cubes of brown jelly.
Unfortunately, that is the only adjectives I have for the cubes
brown in colour and rolled in sugar
I am not a chef, but I do know that a fine dining plate should allow the ingredients to dance together to create a harmonious mouth experience and I get the distinct impression that this chef has recently lost his sense of taste.
+Delicious chocolate desert.
+Staff were attentive and friendly.
+Nicely decorated.
-The trout starter wasn’t for me
-Felt a little cramped with other guests in the one room they placed everyone.
Overall excellent experience.
High quality fine dinning in the heart of Cheshire.
The restaurant itself is beautiful with stunning decor and a welcoming atmosphere.
The food was delicious – I had the tuna to start and the brill for my main – I couldn’t fault it. The service was friendly and the experience exceeded expectations.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.
