BUT the tacos were good. They didn’t skimp on the meat. Free chips and salsa and a good condiment bar for all your different sauces and salsa.
I’ve always been happy with the food, with how they’ve grown, and with the success they’ve achieved. I’ve recommended this place and sent friends, and I’ve always considered it my favorite taco spot in Thousand Oaks.
What truly bothered me was the reaction from the cook, possibly a family member or the owner. He started speaking loudly, practically yelling so I could hear him. Then he came out to the register, clearly upset, refunded my money, and told me that if I wasn’t happy with how they treated me, I should look for another place that would treat me better. I never said they were treating me badly; I only mentioned that the dish didn’t come out the way they usually serve it. After so many years as a customer, you come in tired from work wanting to enjoy your dinner, not to feel uncomfortable or scolded.
I want to make it clear that I’ve supported this business from day one. The first lengua huarache I ever tried here became my favorite for years. Over time, the consistency changed, and sometimes the lengua came out softer, which is why I would ask for it to be cooked a bit more—something I always appreciated because they helped me. But that doesn’t mean I wanted the chorizo cooked that way too; they simply assumed something I never asked for.
I’m glad to see their business has grown, but this situation really made me uncomfortable. I didn’t expect such a strong reaction over such a simple comment, nor did I expect to be practically invited to go somewhere else, especially after being a long-time customer who has always recommended them. I hope they take this as an opportunity to reflect on how they treat those of us who have supported this restaurant for so long.
