I am in this Walmart 3 to 4 times a week, and I’ve developed a genuine fascination with La Michoacana Purepecha. In a world of cutthroat retail, this place is a masterclass in economic defiance.
Half the time they appear closed, and over the past year, I have seen fewer than 10 actual paying customers. Most of the time, the only people in the shop are just taking advantage of an unused chair to rest their legs. I did see a ‘crowd’ of six people once—I nearly called a town meeting to commemorate the historic turnout.
How does a store inside a high-traffic Walmart stay open with virtually zero foot traffic? My friends and I have a running joke that they must be ‘cleaning more than just the floors’ here, because the math simply doesn’t add up. It’s the kind of business model you’d expect to see in a highly-rated crime drama, not next to the Walmart electronics department.
I’m genuinely curious to try the food, but the lack of customers makes me wonder about the inventory turnover. If nobody is buying it, how can it be fresh? Unless they’ve discovered a way to pay the rent with ‘vibes’ and empty chairs, this remains Lakeville’s greatest unsolved mystery
