This time I came with my husband and everything we ate was delicious. We were able to sit outside despite the cold thanks to the heaters, which made it really comfortable.
The only downside was our server, who wasn’t our favorite, but everything else was honestly 10/10. Food, atmosphere, and overall experience were excellent.
We ordered the Clásico ceviche, which came with catch of the day in a classic leche de tigre with choclo, habanero, and sweet potatoes. It was fresh, bright, and flavorful. We also had a tasting of four empanadas (two chicken, one mushroom, one beef), and it was nice that we could mix and match.
For mains, the Lomo Saltado was solid, but the Tacu Tacu tasted bland and was just ok. The Pescado Enchichado leaned sweet but was cooked better than expected. The Black Cod Criollo was dry and a bit bland compared to everything else we had.
We also tried the guava juice. It was a bit sour.
Overall, good food, great service, and a relaxing waterfront ambiance. I would come back but would try different mains next time.
I’d love to come back soon to try more of their menu options.
$10 Chicha Punch
pretty good! crisp, tangy, and refreshing
$10 Chilcano Classico – grapefruit & lemon, cuatro gallos pisco, acholado mommenpop blood orange aperitif , ginger, carbonation
good! citrussy and gingery
$19 Cebiche Clasico – leche de tigre, red onion, habanero, corn, sweet potatoes
good! silky, tangy large cubes of white fish. It’d be nice if the sweet potatoes were cut smaller, so it’d be easier to share.
$11 Chifle de Plantano – plantain chips with avocado sauce
honestly we just got this to snack on with the drinks
Service was pretty quick, which I would expect for Tuesday around 5:30 pm, since the restaurant wasn’t busy. I’d come back for casual drinks and snacks.
Highlight for me was the tiradito, we ordered the special which was a whole Dungeness crab, and it was a spectacle to look at and more so to eat. The classic ceviche was also super refreshing.
Tbh the lobster and steak was a tad disappointing as the steak was too hard and chewy, but not so much as to ruin the meal. The lobster outshined the steak by far, the meat tasted naturally sweet and plump.
The pulpo was a bit on the salty side, but a pleasure to eat too.
I would love to come here again and focus my attention on the raw side of the menu.
If you’re visiting for the first time, it’s a good idea to order as many small plates as possible to sample a broader range of tastes. Be sure to try a couple of ceviches or empanadas (the sampler is a great option). The salads are fantastic as well, especially anything with quinoa in it! If, after trying a few small plates, you still have room (which is unlikely), consider ordering any of the fish dishes for your main course. For dessert, ask about the specials; there is always something good on the menu for the day. Don’t underestimate the quality of their coffee either! I’m not sure where they source the beans from, but the coffee smells and tastes amazing.
The service is excellent. Every time I have visited, I have received great service. The servers are always knowledgeable and helpful if you have questions about the menu.
And the view! If you make a reservation and it’s a nice day, I recommend sitting on the back porch, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bay.
We had a great experience at La Mar in San Francisco! The restaurant is clean, stylish, and has a fancy yet comfortable atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived.
We visited between lunch and dinner, so the full menu wasn’t available at that time. However, we were still able to order two dishes and drinks, and everything we had was fresh and flavorful. Around 5 PM, the kitchen reopened with the full menu, and we were able to enjoy dessert, which was absolutely delicious.
The waterfront location also adds to the charm—perfect for a relaxing meal with a view.
We highly recommend visiting during regular lunch or dinner hours to get the full menu experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in San Francisco and looking for high-quality Peruvian cuisine!
