La Gare is located on the historic railroad square. There are street parkings all around. We had no problem finding a spot within 2 minutes of walking away from the restaurant.
Our first impression was the red bricks exteriors of the building. And the outdoor seating area nestled in an alley between the 2 buildings, looking out to the street. One step inside and you’ll enter a quaint and warm place. The interior decoration reminded me of an older era.
We made a reservation online beforehand and highly recommend you doing so. The restaurant was packed for a Saturday night at 6pm. The reception staff quickly greeted us, complimented my puppy and took us to our outdoor table.
Wow! I couldn’t help but exclaimed! The outside area was beautifully decorated with stars and light strings. Our table was neatly set with a white table cloth on top and leaning against the red wall. Synthetic flowers were hung on the wall, creating an indoor outdoor feel which I love.
Our severe Myle was conscious and considerate to leave us enough time to decide on our dishes. He also gave Butter some treats and was so kind in general. He saw me wearing my Alma matter school Johns Hopkins sweater and sincerely congratulated me on my graduation 🙂
We ordered the escargot and crab cake for appetizers. For main entrees, we opted for veal in mustard sauces and lamb rack (medium cook).
The escargot was a BOMB of flavors and exquisiteness! We had to use a tool to maneuver the escargot out of its shelf but it was so worth it. The garlic butter sauce on the escargot enhanced its flavor and a great dipping sauce for the bread too
We were not that impressed with the crab cake as I had better crab cakes in Baltimore where my school was. But La Gare’s crab cakes were not bad at all imo.
Now, to main entrees. We had salads and soups complementary with every entree. My dish was lamb rack and my sister got her veal in mustard sauces. Both were tender, juicy, well cooked and a master piece of its own kind! I’m very picky and usually order lamb whenever I’ve been to a new restaurant. It’s the standard I judge the restaurant on and La Gare met it!
I really love the fact that La Gare’s dishes have just the right and elegant amount of flavors! Not too bold trying to impress you and not too bland leaving you wondering what you just ate. Just right! And very authentic and comparable with French cuisine I had in Paris 🙂
Great job La Gare’s! Thank you Myle and staff for giving my sister, Butter my puppy and me an unforgettable experience. We will come back for sure ☺️!
The service there was very good.
Tables were a bit small. I could use more room.
This was our first visit there. No regret.
I got their creamy mushroom soup to start and it was a watery, nasty soup with flavors I couldn’t guess. My wife got their tomato soup and that was awesome. Their butter lettuce salad to start was also very fresh and very good. My entrée was Poulet Marco Polo and the sauce in it was tasty, though more creamy than providing depth of flavor. The chicken was dry and a basic chicken breast tossed in a sauce. The side veggies were actually more flavorful than the chicken.
Overall – It was decent, but far from what we expect from a French restaurant with such great reviews.
I always look forward to their Beef Wellington,
followed by Chocolate Mousse. This time their included soup was a great Minestrone! My wife usually has the escargot in garlic and parsley butter. We share the fresh bread dipped in the escargot butter. They also have some good champagne selections like Schramsberg and Veuve Clicquot.
They also have old favorites like Chateaubriand for two, and Cherries/Berries Flambee.
The crafted wood furniture, scenic artwork, alphorn, and Swiss cowbells all contribute wonderfully to the French-Swiss ambiance.
All on all, my favorite pick for classic French dining.
Another excellent dinner at La Gare this year!
We had Beef bourguignon (Beef Burgundy) and Wild Alaskan Salmon.
The leek soup was excellent as was our rack of lamb.
Also included with the meal is a fresh delicious salad and warm bread.
Free corkage on a monday night, so we had a great bottle brought by said friend.
The restaurant is sort of a throwback to another era, and I say that completely as a compliment.
