UPDATE: I have eaten here a few times since my original review. Each time the food has been good as have the margaritas. However, every time I have eaten La Frontera, the chips and salsa experience has let me down. Never enough salsa and you end up with large chunks of gross looking onion very fast. See the attached photo of the thimble size container of salsa I got with a nice bag of chips tonight.

HINT: La Frontera, order takeout from Flores to see how your competitors are doing chips and salsa. It is night and day.

Original 5 star review: I was very pleasantly surprised by my first visit to La Frontera. I live in the area and will admit that I had low expectations given the checkered history of new restaurants here – especially with other excellent Mexican restaurant options around. But the chips, salsa, food, and margaritas were all excellent – I completely cleaned my plate. Service was also good. It was a little dark in our booth so maybe use brighter bulbs? But otherwise a solid first impression. Will definitely be going back.

Just like that – it blew many, many Tex Mex restaurants in Austin away – fantastic food!
Even tastier some of the legendary ones I will not name here

Nice, fresh sports TV type vibe

Superb service

Legendary – as good as it gets:

• The Green Jalapeno sauce (it’s like a Dona – but has a lovely garlic flavor to it too!)

Loved – must order it every time

• Red salsa (has a kick and a lovely onion crunch)
• Chili Con Carne Sauce (reminds me of old school Austin Tex Mex taste)
• .
• Migas Plate – with fantastic refried beans and those yummy potatoes (touch salty however)
• Chili Rilleno – with chicken fajita meat – get it with Chili Con Carne Sauce
• .
• Refried beans (how do you get that amazing taste)
• Charro beans (fantastic taste with hint of bacon)

Could Improve

• The Spanish Rice
• The Corn Tortilla was very dry
• Flour tortilla was better than corn tortilla – but could use work

While visiting Austin, Texas for a family wedding, a cousin and I, visited La Frontera Mexican Grill & Bar, it was close to our hotel. I’m not a big fan of Mexican themed food, however, my fish and rice dish was pretty good. My cousin enjoyed his food too. The server was patient, polite and suggestive. The dining area ambience was warm and welcoming. The seating area had a mixture of booths, table and chairs. There was ample parking, and food was reasonable priced.

We tried this spot on Friday and loved it so much we came back the next day! Even though it was only their second day open, the service was impressively fast and super friendly. Our food and drinks came out quickly, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We’re so excited to have a great new option in the neighborhood. The only thing that could make it even better would be some outdoor seating and a little play area for kids—but even without that, it’s a fantastic addition to the area!

Seated quickly. Waitress was nice but overwhelmed. Food was flavorful but the rice and pork were barely warm. Not satisfying at all. It’s safe to assume it was “sitting in the window too long” which is strange because it came out pretty fast. Feels like it’s not a great value for the price. One of the pork pieces was just a block of fat.

Great-looking restaurant with a nice bar and a large menu. Overall, the food was fine. Nothing stood out as exceptional, but nothing was bad either. If I had to critique anything, the queso was pretty boring. On the positive side, the brisket tacos were excellent and easily the best thing we ordered.

My only real issue came at the end when the bill was presented. The preset tip options were 18%, 22%, or 25%. Tipping expectations are starting to feel excessive, and that left a slightly negative final impression.

We have been so excited for this new restaurant in our neighborhood. It was just as good as we had hoped. The service was quick, and the food and drinks were tasty. I ordered the El Diablo enchiladas, I believe is what it was called, for my meal which was delicious. We are excited to return again soon!

This place opened within the last month and I was, initially and honestly, a bit confused at their sequence of actions leading up to opening. Seemed kind of quick and abrupt- but I’ve never opened a restaurant before so who knows? Anyways, my beer was ice cold, my guacamole was extremely fresh, and my food was really, really tasty. I ordered the Asada Fajitas and it did not disappoint. Cooked perfectly, well seasoned, and the price was spot on in this economy.

My service was incredible and nothing was ever empty, not once did I think “I wish my bartender/waiter checked in on me”. Please keep this service up.

I am local to the location and I will have a hard time choosing between La Frontera and Flores down the road.

Other notes- this place needs a more stocked bar, some more integral decorations, and needs to take the time to ensure their employees are all on the same page. Still getting a 5/5 from me though.

Seriously some of the best (if not the best) Mexican food in Austin. Authentic dishes full of flavor and consistently delicious … al Pastor tacos, enchiladas (classic or trio), crispy tacos, queso, fajitas, taco salad, bacon-wrapped shrimp, chili relleno, carnitas tacos, and so much more. Do yourself and your family and friends a favor. Stop in and enjoy this gem of a restaurant … and then go to the Oasis for the view.
