11/10 highly recommend!
As always, we were quickly seated and served a large bowl of fresh, warm corn tortilla chips with excellent house salsa. We ordered queso on the side, which arrived thick, hot, and tasty. Our drinks came quickly (Coke products.) Our waitress, Yuli, was very friendly, attentive, and helpful.
For our dinner we ordered the grilled cazuelada, a mixture of deliciously-seasoned steak, chorizo, chicken, shrimp, bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions for two, served on an enormous sizzle platter, accompanied by two large very hot plates filled with refried beans, Spanish rice, quacamole, shredded lettuce, crema, and pico de gallo. We each got three foil-wrapped, freshly-seared flour tortillas.
The only flat point in the meal for me was the rice, which was oddly flavorless. Cilantro and lime would have kicked it up a notch. It didn’t matter. I was focused on the contents of the sizzle platter. Every single delectable bite was *juicy*! The shrimp were *succulent*! My husband doesn’t normally like shrimp and HE ate shrimp! The chicken! The steak! The chorizo! The perfect bite was a tortilla with a layer of lettuce for crunch, a bit of crema, and a mixture of the grilled meats. Wow!
The ONLY problem with the cazuelada is the portioning It’s for “two.” We’re two not-small guys. This thing could easily feed four. Either come *very* hungry, or be prepared for lots of amazing leftovers. 😀
So we left room for dessert Hey, a year ago it was wedding cake, so why not? We asked Yuli to surprise us. She brought us changos, and sopapillas.
Changos are small flour tortillas stuffed with lightly sweet cream cheese filling, deep fried, rolled in cinnamon sugar, served on a chocolate swirl with whipped cream garnishes. There were two. They were hot, very rich, and very satisfying. I suggest getting these after a *lighter* meal! They really demanded a cup of coffee, for which we didn’t have room. 🙁
The sopapillas were made from a single flour tortilla, quartered and deep fried, tossed in cinnamon sugar, then drizzled with honey and chocolate sauce before being topped with dollops of whipped cream. We ate them too.
Our entire meal for two, with drinks, two desserts, and plenty of leftovers, came in at just under $60. Because it was a special evening for us, and Yuli was so good, she got a nice tip too.
Please note, you can *easily* get out of La Fragua spending a LOT less than we did per person. It was a special occasion for us, so we treated ourselves. You can treat yourself just by paying them a visit and eating pretty much *anything* off of their menu. 😉
