Service was quick but that was also because the place was otherwise empty.
Tiramisu was also below average.
They started us off with warm-ish bread and butter. Bread is one of those small but telling details. It’s your first impression of the meal, yet so many places seem to treat it as an afterthought. This one didn’t stand out.
For the appetizer, I had the Bouillabaisse. It was okay, but it barely had any actual broth — and Bouillabaisse is a soup, after all. The calamari in it was also bland and needed more seasoning overall.
For the main course, I went with the Surf and Turf. It was fine. I asked for the steak rare and it was cooked properly, which I appreciated. The scallops, however, were unusually small – not sure why they chose that type. They also placed a sprig of thyme on top as a garnish, which felt a bit unrefined since it wasn’t integrated into the dish and didn’t add much.
For dessert, I had the chocolate raspberry tartufo. It was just okay. Nothing memorable, more like something to check the dessert box. I also tried the sorbet, which tasted a lot like a basic popsicle.
All in all, the food didn’t leave much of an impression. I wouldn’t come back for the food alone. I don’t think the cost is appropriate for what I got.
The service was fine, and food was okay. I would probably have given them a 3 star rating except for when we went to pay and use our $80 in gift cards, they simply said sorry our management has changed and these are now all void.
While I understand management changes, I think it would be fair to say they could have offered 10% or 15% off, or at the very least say hey we’ll comp your desert. This would be common courtesy for any restaurant to at least offer something.
I don’t think it’s right for you to use “new management” to void any gift cards that were purchased at your restaurant considering the name, location, logo, everything is exactly the same.
All this to say, I think for a half decent meal at best and that kind of treatment toward customers when your restaurant is almost empty says a lot.
I wouldn’t recommend as there are far better Italian options around downtown.
I ordered the Fettuccine Mushroom which was overcooked and too salty. You could tell the Parmesan was low quality- it had a gritty texture and didn’t melt like authentic parmigiano reggiano which I expected when paying $33 for a vegetarian pasta! Also, they don’t make their own fresh pasta which again was disappointing for the price.
Sadly, La Fenice just didn’t deliver. Between the uninspired, low quality food and inflated prices, I wouldn’t return and understand why it was so empty on a Saturday night.
Our server was very attentive and friendly. Thank you
I came before the movie and my partner and I ordered 3 dishes. Everything tasted amazing and I’d highly recommend the food.
Service was disappointing. It started good with someone greeting us and offering to take our jackets. Then things really went down hill. I’ll note there was a bigger business table near us which had taken up 12 ish seats…
So our issues with the service – when given the specials it was powered through. No delicious adjectives just bleh. But some of the items sounded good, tried to ask for them repeated and server walked away. Our water wasn’t refilled. My partner wasn’t offered another glass of sparkling wine. Between each interaction with the server there was a 10 minute wait… And everyone else seemed too focused on the business group.
Overall the food was spot on, good depth of flavours, past perfect doneness, and just the right amount of sauce.
Service needs to improve and every table needs attention.
