I found an absolute gem while working down in Littlehampton. La Cucina in Rustington is one of those rare places that reminds you how hospitality should feel from the moment you walk in.
I asked for a table for one and instead of being tucked somewhere awkward, I was seated comfortably at a four seat table and everything was set and cleared calmly and politely. Straight away I felt welcomed, not judged or rushed.
I ordered a sparkling elderflower drink and already knew I wanted a proper carbonara. I had checked two other Italian restaurants earlier, one didn’t have pancetta and the other used bacon, so when they told me they use pancetta and make everything fresh in-house with no shortcuts, that was me decided immediately.
I started with the bruschetta and it was loaded with fresh tomatoes on lovely bread, seasoned nicely with a touch of sea salt that just worked. Simple, fresh, done properly.
The carbonara came out hot, creamy from the cheese and egg, full of flavour and perfectly cooked. A proper authentic carbonara. I asked for a little more parmesan and they brought a bowl and let me say when to stop, no attitude, no hesitation, just proper service.
What really stood out was the way they treat people. Polite, warm, calm and genuine. Attentive without hovering. It made the whole experience even better. When you eat out alone for work a lot, you really notice places that make you feel comfortable.
Before I left I asked about basil on pizza and the gentleman looked at me like the answer was obvious and said of course fresh basil always. You can tell they take pride in doing things properly.
When I finished and got up to leave, he actually walked to the door, opened it for me and wished me a good evening. I shook his hand to thank him and he placed his other hand over mine in that old-school hospitable way that shows real respect and warmth. Small gesture, big feeling.
I told them I would be back tomorrow and I meant it. Some places you go once. This is the kind of place you look forward to coming back to.
If you want good food, real hospitality and to feel valued as a customer, come here. La Cucina is a gem and I’m genuinely glad I found it.

Pizza was extremely oily and the centre was so soft it wouldn’t hold together at all the toppings slid off when picked up so I had to eat with a knife and fork, tasted very oily couldn’t eat much before feeling nausea. Asked if this was normal and they said this is normal apparently. Did get a refund on the pizzas though without asking which was nice. Service was great.

I couldn’t speak higher of this restaurant. It is so authentic, the staff are so kind, so attentive and friendly. The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is incredible! The food is so fresh too!

First experience of La Cucina, having been recommend by friends. There were 4 of us for lunch and we selected from the great value Lunch menu. We had the Crab mayonnaise on Sourdough as a starter followed by Chicken Milanese with spaghetti tomorrow. Both very delicious and tasty with decent portions, accompanied by a bottle of Sangiovese. Excellent service and lovely restaurant. The owner treated us as his house guests, so warm and comfortable. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos so will have to dine there again!

This is a good quality Italian with an excellent menu.I was slightly disappointed with the size of the starter I had which was £9 and consisted of two prawns, two slices of sour dough bread, and sauce. However, the mains were excellent. I would revisit.

Visited this restaurant on Saturday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The service is absolutely first class, so attentive, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Food was amazing and had a great atmosphere. Will definitely be returning soon. Thank you for making our evening so enjoyable

Local gem status! Really good food, great service and a good atmosphere! We ate here last night, second time we’ve been and we loved it! For mains we both had pizzas which were huge and delicious, with such a gorgeous stone baked base. For dessert Sarah had a palette cleansing mango sorbet and I pushed the boat out with an espresso martini which was so good!
Can’t wait to go back to this wonderful local gem!
