My wife always asking me to take her to eat special French food especially on holiday. The restaurant feel quite exclusive and atmosphere because it is like trying to get concert ticket. They make you standing outside for quite a long time. My wife find out I pay a lot of US dollar for the small food. Taste is ok. Wine very good. She stop asking me to take her to French food now.

La Cigale operates on a deliberate, almost contrarian operating model—and that’s precisely where the value proposition begins.

This is not a walk-in, impulse-driven dining experience. You must arrive early, put your name on the list, and commit to the process. That initial friction functions as a strategic filter. Those who understand patience and intentionality are rewarded with one of the most intimate and disciplined dining executions in the city.

Once seated, the thesis becomes immediately clear: every seat is effectively the chef’s table. Sightlines are direct, unobstructed, and immersive. You are not dining near the action—you are embedded in it. The kitchen operates with quiet confidence, no theatrics, just precision, rhythm, and control. Watching plates come together in real time reinforces trust in the product before the first bite lands.

The menu is tightly curated and deeply rooted in classical technique, executed with restraint and clarity. Each course demonstrates focus rather than excess—ingredients are respected, flavors are layered but never crowded, and plating is purposeful without being precious. Highlights ranged from pristine oysters with bracing accompaniments, to expertly cooked proteins with profound depth of flavor, to vegetables treated with the same seriousness as the main course. Desserts close the loop cleanly—balanced, thoughtful, and exact.

Service mirrors the kitchen’s philosophy: efficient, informed, and properly calibrated. There is no unnecessary chatter, yet every interaction adds value. Timing is sharp, pacing is intentional, and the team understands when to engage and when to disappear. This is hospitality as operational excellence, not performance.

Atmosphere is warm, focused, and refreshingly adult. No distractions, no scene-chasing—just a room full of people who came to eat well and understand what they’re witnessing.

Bottom line: La Cigale rewards those willing to invest time upfront with a dining experience that feels both rare and grounded. High-integrity execution, total transparency, and a chef-forward model where every guest gets a front-row seat. This is not just a meal—it’s a masterclass in disciplined hospitality.

I had an amazing Valentine’s dinner here with my wife. The menu changes daily and the chef prepares the whole meal over a wood fire.

No standard reservations, show up at the restaurant to line up for the 4:30p booking of the 6:00p and 8:30p seatings. Get there early, we were second in line at 3:45p.

Check their website for upcoming closing dates.

Fabulous evening out. Every detail – from the special new harvest olive oil to the secret cubby holes under the counter – is thoughtful and elegant. Very warm hospitality, excellent and interesting food, and a gorgeous ambiance that made us feel like we’d taken a mini vacation. Most of the complaints are from folks who couldn’t figure out the wait-list or were annoyed they couldn’t get in. Sorry, it’s not terribly complicated and is all super clear on the website.

Lastly, the all-in payment model is very welcome in a city that often tacks on health, service, credit card, etc fees before tax and tip. It’s nice to see it upfront and I hope this model can be maintained.

Such a fantastic evening! From the beautiful space and good vibes, to the impeccable service, to the classic, tasty dishes in Southwestern French style. Such a great addition to the San Francisco food scene. We will definitely be back.

La Cigale is wonderful and unique with a different style of SW France cooking all done over a firewood driven hearth. There is also a performance element as you sit around the small kitchen/hearth with 15 seats. Food is in a rustic family serve style but very very carefully done with extraordinary attention to details of sourcing and in this age not wasting anything.
There’s too many dishes and tastes to remember everything in detail with about a dozen servings – a grilled cabbage with an olive anchovy dressing was excellent with the cabbage really cooked in coals so had a smokiness to it also. A homemade pork blood sausage with apple base was very different than usual and very good. Of course this is French cooking so there was duck, oysters, fisherman’s stew, sparkling wine, desserts, cheese, etc.
Menu today is prix fixe where you make a few choices with a couple of add-on options. There is lots of food so add-ons are really an option and may be too filling if not a heavy eater. Wines are nice and pairing not expensive.
There are many unique features but outstanding is the price is $140 and is really $140 with no added tax or service with tips explicitly not accepted.
A quirk is they do not take reservations rather have a waitlist drop-in process where you can write in your name between 430 and 5. At 5 you can put yourself on the wait list online. We don’t know when they clear the waitlist but suspect by 530ish. You are rolling the dice for a seating at 6 or 830 so you can’t plan ahead really and would want a backup thought.
We highly encourage trying this restaurant and will be back.

What a unique experience. We were lucky to sit closer to the fire and you can literally feel the heat and have a great view watching Joseph perform his craft. He’s clearly passionate about food and tells you a lot about where his food is sourced from. He also said the menu will be changing regularly as seasons change.

Overall the food was phenomenal. Fantastic for a date night. Highly recommend.

La Cigale is a very charming and the food and wine offerings were excellent. It’s a warm and inviting space and I appreciate how the kitchen takes center stage as you watch the food being prepared and plated.

My wife and I each ordered different items from that evening’s menu and also had a few of the add-ons so that we could try as much as possible. The chef clearly takes a lot of care in sourcing the ingredients and as a result each course was interesting and quite tasty.

Overall a great meal/experience and I appreciate that they don’t take reservations because it allowed my wife and I to be spontaneous and decide that day to swing by. We look forward to dining there again and seeing what’s on the menu next time.

If French omakase was a thing – this is it. (Without the small portions)
Excellent countryside French upgraded to high end
Complex flavors local hyper sourced ingredients. Animal butchered onsite
Wine menu huge but special pairing with each course recommended
10/10
Also PRIX FIXE! Tip and tax included. Can we start having that everywhere please?

Oh and it has a giant hearth
Ps: I’m French and I have every right to be snobby. This just works

Dining at La Cigale during its soft opening was nothing short of unforgettable, this may have been my favorite meal of 2025. Specializing in southwestern French cuisine, all of the food is cooked over wood-burning ovens, which brings a unique depth to every dish. The restaurant itself is a history lesson in culinary technology. The chef and his wife scoured thrift shops to source vintage kitchen equipment from various eras and he will educate about each piece throughout the meal.

The meal – three courses for $140 (all-inclusive) – is an immersive experience, and the service is exceptional. The waitstaff and hostess are attentive and lovely; the chef takes great care in sourcing each ingredient. Expect to hear stories about the peaches, fennel, and other fresh produce that make their way onto your plate.

The wine list is excellent and the food is plentiful. Come with friends and be prepared to stay for a while; our dinner lasted over three hours, worth every minute.
