GO WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Not just here, but any independent restaurant in your village or town. We are losing so many, they need our support, and when the food is as good as this, what a pleasure it is. We were sad to hear that after many years the owner of La Chouette is selling up and the restaurant will become housing.
We visited on a Thursday evening in August and had a wonderful meal in a lovely setting with candlelight and ambient jazz music. The food was delicious, fresh and carefully sourced. We left wine choice and drink recommendations generally to our friendly front-of-house/head chef/sommelier all-in-one expert, who picked some great pairings.
Yes, it’s not the cheapest restaurant, but what we got was value for the experience. As the owner himself said quite transparently, which I respect, if food prices go up, he will pass that on to the customer – our increasing supermarket food bills are testament to this. Rather than compromise on quality, he would prefer to ensure standards are maintained.
I recommend the scallops and the perfectly cooked rump beef on the current seasonal menu. My wife loved the ‘king of fish’. We were told once the website goes down the restaurant has closed. Permanently. So worth checking before you go

Sublime food every course – chef host Fred talks you through the menu , wine list and is always entertaining- stand out for me is the fallow deer – this is the best for miles .

This place is a must if you’re around the area. Photos do not do the food and the atmosphere justice. Everything was fantastic, from the venue to the food to the charming owner. I only wished we lived closer to become regulars.

Outstanding food. I listened to the chef’s recommendations and I was not disappointed. Excellent asparagus starter coupled with a home made crusty roll! Followed by the best bit of rump steak I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating; I could not tell it from a fillet. If you want to experience exceptional food which is made from fresh and local ingredients I strongly advise you to make a visit.

We enjoyed a fantastic anniversary evening at La Chouette. From the warm welcome to exquisite Belgium chocolate soufflé the evening was outstanding and the best food we’ve tasted in the area. The wine was paired perfectly and the warm crusty bread was ideal for soaking up the flavours of each course. Perfect for a special occasion.

As my wife and I had missed going out on Valentine’s Day we went to La Chouette as a substitute. What a good idea! Food was consistently excellent; service was excellent and the host was excellent company. Would strongly recommend and we will be back!

A mini escape to France (où peut-être la Belgique?) on a chilly winter’s evening in the UK.
Frédéric’s beautiful restaurant had a log fire burning in the snug / bar to welcome us in, and he was a delightful and entertaining host.
Delicious, authentic food and wine in a cosy dining room with just a few candle-lit tables. We were served a whole loaf of freshly-baked bread with butter to the table but still managed to clean our plates.
Such a treat and thank you for your hospitality.
