I’ve now visited La Camera in Southgate twice with my family, and each time has been an incredibly pleasant experience. The food is excellent, from entrée to dessert, with perfectly timed service between courses so you’re never left waiting too long. It keeps the whole dining experience smooth and enjoyable.

I like their classic margarita, it’s authentic, not overloaded with ice and less alcohol like you get at so many other places. I always make sure to order one as soon as I sit down.

The atmosphere is another highlight. I love sitting out on the balcony where you get a beautiful view of the Yarra River, it really adds something special to the meal.

Overall, great food, great drinks, great service, and a wonderful setting. Highly recommended!

The food was pretty tasty and looked great but definitely on the pricer side costing around $61.41 for a pasta and pizza. We were seated by the windows which had a view of the river. However, there was quite alot of dust that had collected on the window sill which put me off a bit, especially with how close the tables and seats were to the windows.

My husband and I are visiting from the Sunshine Coast and had the pleasure of dining at La Camera two nights ago. The food was delicious with very generous servings. The staff were attentive and Paul (the manager) greeted us and sat us out on the balcony overlooking the river and Southbank. It was a lovely cosy atmosphere was filled with authentic Italian music from two gentlemen singing. I was transported back to Rome (where I had visited three months ago) with their songs and the delicious food. All in all a wonderful experience and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting authentic Italian cuisine.

A nice Italian restaurant on the First floor level, with courteous staff, tasty food and relatively quiet. We had a lunch catchup with old work colleagues. We could all talk and hear each other.
My chicken parmigiana was humongous others had large portion of fish. Great value and perfect atmosphere for us!

1- My Updated Review:

I visited this restaurant again after my first visit two months ago, which had left me quite underwhelmed—especially considering the high prices and average quality at the time. However, I’m happy to say that my second experience was significantly better.

This time, I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken thigh with capsicum dish, and the fish of the day was cooked beautifully. The antipasto starter was also a great way to begin the meal. It’s clear that the management has taken steps to improve the food and overall experience, and I genuinely appreciate the effort they’ve made.

That said, I still feel the pasta dishes need more attention—particularly when it comes to showcasing the listed ingredients. The sauces lack distinct character, and the toppings could be more generous and better integrated, especially given the premium pricing.

Overall, I’m updating my review to reflect a much more satisfactory visit. Thanks to the team for the improvements—I look forward to seeing how the menu continues to evolve.

2- My old review: The experience was definitely unsatisfactory considering the high prices and average quality. friendly staff thoug. The owner’s initial talk about how special their ingredients are felt misleading, as the overall experience was quite basic given the premium prices. There was barely any sausage or meat in the dishes. While the menu listed two lines of different ingredients, I didn’t see any of them represented properly in the pasta;—just different sauce colors with no real distinction. For $35-$40, the taste was very average and definitely not worth it. Also, the garlic bread at the beginning felt like a distraction rather than a real addition. I don’t need free extras—I’m fine with paying a premium, but at least make it worth the price.

Grateful we were able to get a table for 4 with a last minute reservation (thank you). We were there around 7.30 but by the time we were wrapping up our meal the buzz seemed to go and the cleaning started. Were looking forward to trying the lasagne after our host talked up his mama’s recipe but a large table nearby had finished it off. Happy with our food and drinks – had enough pizza to take home as leftovers. Some wonderful flavour combos which we all enjoyed!

Wonderful service and extremely tasty food. Our waitress from Brasil was excellent – attentive, professional and helpful. Food (as you can see by the photos) was fabulous – good portion sizes and tasty and delicious. Loved our night out. Tables inside and out. Make sure you book as it gets busy.

From the young man who greeted us and showed us to our table, to the young lady who took our order and the two other ladies that were so friendly to us – every member of staff we encountered were so warming and welcoming. The atmosphere was beautiful. Our first time in Melbourne this week and it was the best place we’d eaten by far. Even reading the reviews you can see how much they care for their customers and it’s so refreshing to see. The food was just perfection, i couldn’t fault any of it. We both had the porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce. My mum said it was the best sauce she’s ever tasted, and me the best steak i’ve ever had! The view from our table was just stunning. We will be back!

It is particularly concerning that the owner was present and allowed an environment marked by hostility to develop. Reports of employees shouting and using disrespectful language towards patrons fostered an atmosphere detrimental to the overall guest experience. Additionally, there was a noticeable lack of competence among the staff, who struggled to perform even fundamental financial transactions.

### Financial Misconduct and Security Alert

The situation escalated to a serious financial concern when a staff member, posing as a manager and displaying inadequate cash handling skills, attempted to implement an unauthorized overcharge. This action was so suspicious that my bank promptly flagged the transaction, blocking it and issuing a security alert.

Subsequently, it was confirmed by my bank that there were multiple unauthorized attempts made to charge my card, totaling over $300, following the initial incident. This pattern raises significant concerns about the establishment’s handling of financial transactions and has resulted in the cancellation of my credit card for security reasons.

### Lack of Accountability

Following the failure to process the transaction correctly, the staff inappropriately redirected blame towards me instead of providing a simple apology. The continued absence of any acknowledgment of their error highlights a troubling lack of self-awareness and professionalism within the establishment.

Their attempts to overcharge, combined with a disregard for basic financial protocols and a notable display of aggression, necessitated intervention from my financial institution to protect me from their actions.

This establishment does not warrant patronage. I have taken the step of formally reporting this matter to Consumer Affairs Victoria, which has initiated a comprehensive investigation.

I encourage anyone who has faced similar issues to reach out to Consumer Affairs Victoria to file a report regarding this business and its practices. Collective awareness and vigilance are essential in addressing such concerns.
