Multiple visits now have yielded an overall poor experience. The sushi has been to par, tasting fresh enough each time. I’ve been optimistic that our experience would improve each time but each time it seems there is another series of “missteps”– long wait time for food, the wait staff not communicating the menu properly, being out of common sushi cuts regularly. The management seems more preoccupied with running some volleyball team than running a decent service restaurant on a Saturday night. Our waitress was sweet and accommodating enough, not her fault she was the only waitress working– serving 5-6 tables max at one time. We ordered our dinners nearly right away upon our arrival and waited over an hour to receive our food. We received all but one person’s dish, so 3 out of 4 meals were brought to the table with the promise the remaining plate would be out shortly. Half an hour later, we reminded them of the missed plate to which at this point was pointless to sit and wait for as everyone else was either done with their meal or uncomfortable enough with the situation that they were not in the mood to finish their dinners anyway. The bill also took forever to be brought out and they had to be reminded we still needed to-go boxes… No sushi in my opinion is worth the trouble of coming into this place. Not to mention, the floors are sticky with Lord knows what food and drink residues, as well the tables and benches were sprinkled with crumb debris of some kind– GROSS. One star for ‘comping’ part of our bill (only given after we commented on the poor experience) and one star for the sushi which was OK, edible and I’m not stricken with food poisoning.. At least yet anyway. With the way things were going and how they’ve continuously fallen from any normal person’s expectation of a dining out experience I shouldn’t be surprised if sickness ensues.. I’m sick of giving this place endless “second chances”. Hopefully they get their situation together or do everyone a favor and get out of the dining business altogether.

The food we ordered was absolutely delicious. The wait staff however, left a lot to be desired. We came during happy hour, to have dinner and cocktails. We were never offered another drink after our first. We ordered appetizers (amazing!), and sushi (also amazing). The waiter brought the sushi and named off a couple of them before saying “and whatever else you ordered” before going back to socializing with the rest of the wait staff. This was the first night we have had away from or three children in months, so we were pretty excited to be together and have some fun. The food was great, but the staff needs training, and basic people skills.

To start off, I live very close to this restaurant and wanted to find a restaurant/bar that I would be able to go to watch games or grab dinner. I was very disappointed to say the least. The only good thing about this place was that it had a big bar with lots of seating.

Drinks: I couldn’t believe the prices of these drinks was similar to that of downtown Chicago or Vegas. $10 for a rum and Coke is a quite a bit high for a hole in the wall, office space converted into a restaurant. Not to mention that while sitting by the bar area, the TV was blaring commentary of a soccer game that nobody was paying attention to and made it very hard to converse with other people.

Service: After getting seated down, our party of 5 people had the worst service of any restaurant, ever. Our waitress started off by spilling a drink all over the table, leaving it sticky. That wasn’t horrible and could be forgiven, but we never received anything in return and it was acted like it never happened. Like other reviewers have stated, it then took 45 minutes to get our meals which were cold. It then also took her another 20 minutes to bring silverware to eat the ribeye. After many complaints, we could not believe that a manager never came over to talk to us or we weren’t credited anything. THEY MADE US PAY FOR THE COLD MEALS AND TOUGH STEAK. The restaurant wasn’t packed by any means either.

Food: Like I said above, the ribeye was cold by the time we got it but that wouldn’t have mattered anyways. There wasn’t a point of her asking how we wanted it cooked; we ordered it medium rare and came to us well done. The sushi wasn’t bad, but not deserving of the price tag put on it. Pretty much any non-fish food had that gross fishy taste still, and we ran to McDonald’s afterwards to actually eat.

Decor: The restaurant clearly looks like an office, even though they tried to make it feel “sophisticated” with cheesy fireplaces. We were also sat by the back door where the heat needed to be turned way up, even for mid fall.

Overall, I would suggest going anywhere in North Liberty besides here, and if you want sushi then make the drive to Iowa City or Cedar Rapids to have a way better experience and night.

Really bad dining experience. I ordered some sort of ahi tuna sashimi that was too soft and wet. Not so good. Then we waited 35 minutes for main food orders and the restaurant was not that busy. My wife got a filet that was actually tough…a dining first for both of us. Grandson had a noodle bowl with chicken that was overcooked. Our son had a breaded fried chicken breast that was also overcooked and under seasoned with an over easy egg on top…just a really boring dish. My ribeye was thin and chewy. Not exactly a top notch Asian dining experience. The only winner was my younger grandson who opted for the chicken tenders and fries with ketchup…which came out about 20 minutes ahead of the rest of the order. Might as well have gone out in the back yard, started a little fire and tossed a hundred bucks on it. The waiter got his 20% because it’s not his fault, but the best tip I could give him is look for a new job because I can’t imagine this joint is going to stay open for very long.

The Ribeye dinner was really quite good. Sadly, the menu price stated $23 but we were charged $24.99.

The hot sake was good and I followed that with a very tasty Mai Thai – Happy hour had half-off drinks which I recommend as there drinks are relatively expensive for North Liberty Iowa – but they were also BETTER than most places in the area so you get what you pay for. We had a very good meal – not a fan that they auto-gratuity 18%for parties of 6+ but it really just hurts the waiter as we always tip at least 20%.

We will be back.

Bought a Caterpillar, Chin Roll, and Snow Crab Futomaki Rolls tonight and it was awful. Something was too sweet inside the rolls as well as the Futomaki was cut too thin for the hefty price and only came in 8 pieces whereas Konomi, another Japanese Restaurant in Coralville, has a similar roll that comes in 10 thick pieces with solid flavors and same price. Don’t know how the owner could even stand around at the bar knowing how bad the sushi tastes. I DON’T RECOMMEND ORDERING SUSHI HERE. I’m sure the entrees for dinner and bar drinks are less horrible but I will not proceed to try it as this has ruined my experience as a whole at Kyodai. Three Sam, Takanami, and Konomi are definitely better sushi joints to eat at. Lastly not quite sure if Kyodai is a bar or a low scale shitty Japanese restaurant.

Surprisingly poor service. Between both our drinks and app being served very slowly, her meal being served while mine sat on the sushi bar for ten minutes, then not having our Groupon taken off our bill immediately after being told it would be I don’t think we’ll be back. I’m always looking to cut slack but when the restaurant is only half full and our server never checked on us until we wanted our bill it doesn’t matter how good the food is. Needless to say we were very disappointed.

I can’t review the actual food because we left before eating, but our experience was bad. We called ahead and were told the only opening left that night at the grill was at 9 PM, so we took it. When we arrived, we were informed that a bachelorette party was running late that night and was going to be using the grill, but they could cook our food and bring it to us at the bar. No offer of a discount or anything for the trouble of waiting until 9:00 only to have our reservation not be as important as others. Luckily, Konomi in Coralville could squeeze us in, and they were very accommodating.

While the food was good, the service was so weak that I will not return. There seemed to be issues across all levels: There was only one sushi chef working most of the time who was unable to keep up with demands; The server disappeared for long stretches of time and did not check to see if our orders came out correctly (they did not) or let us know if any dishes were delayed (they just never came); Someone we assume was a manager brought a beer by at one point but never checked on our group (and no one refilled waters or offered another round); and additional staff wandered around without a clear purpose- perhaps they were bussers? Or servers? They also had no sense of urgency and didn’t seem to know what they were doing.

Restaurants have bad nights, I get it. But every aspect of the restaurant with the exception of the fish itself was not working well. If anyone had stated that the bad service was an anomaly I could get over it. But it seemed like business as usual for them.

Normally I’m not one to post negative reviews online, but yesterday must have been the worst dining experience I’ve ever had, and we didn’t even eat! First of all, we walked in, and we stood there by the ‘please wait to be seated sign’ for a solid 5 minutes before the bartender informed us a host would be right with us. So we waited, eventually the bartender screams for the host (who still didnt show). She finally comes out from behind the bar, and tells us they are full but we can sit at the bar. There are two employees behind the bar, I can assume both are bartenders and servers. After we told her we would sit at the bar. the people next to us had a groupon the server forgot to add and ended up getting charged an extra 150$ to the bill, when they said something the server responded with ‘well I already ran your credit card and i cant change it.’ What? You’re going to charge them for your mistake? All while this is happening people from the other end of the bar are trying to flag down the female bartender…she blatantly ignores them for a solid ten minutes, during which time she finally comes up to us and asks us what we’d like to drink, she offered us two beers they were out of on tap, and had no knowledge of what they had in stock for bottled beers, it took us another 10 minutes just to order a beer because everything we tried to order they were out of. And another ten minutes for her to get our beers. At this point we were so taken aback by the lake of costumer service we didn’t even want to eat. We sat for another 20 minutes before anyone even approached us about ordering. We informed them that we would just like to pay for our beers and head out. Took another 15 minutes to get our check. In the whole time we were there, several groups of people had come in, i never saw a host, and the couple next to us ended up cancelling the food order thet had placed because they had waited over an hour! Do you not have a manager?! Like who owns this place and allows employees to charge for their own mistakes? And employees ignore customers?! I will not be back, and I will be spreading the word about the horrible customer service. Fortunately for them I cant say anything about the food since we never got to try any. Utterly pitiful.
