The sweet shrimp was very good, the seared salmon with Japanese mayo as well.
I forget what all else we had tried, but it was 22 plates for the four of us.
Would definitely stop on again if there was one close.
If you have someone in your party who isn’t sold on sushi, they also have a variety of other dishes, including ramen, udon, and tempura. You can request a fresh order of anything on the belt as well.
The restaurant typically isn’t too loud, and the booths are separated with high dividers so it’s nice to feel like your party has a little privacy.
The waits can be long so it’s worth making a reservation during busy times. We’ve often been seated shortly after checking in for our reservation, even if we’re a little early.
There were interesting dishes, and I split each 2 piece dish with a friend! Some were limited catches to the season, so the menu does change once in a while. The fish were fresh and the portions were generous. We got seven dishes total and were pretty full after that. However, the quality and taste were pretty similar to any other sushi place in SD, so I don’t think it’s worth the parking and wait, unless you really enjoy the revolving aspect.
The one thing that made my experience a bit unpleasant was the strong wet toilet smell where we were sitting 🙁
Staff were helpful and attentive, and explained how ordering worked well.
Parking sucks, as how it normally is in Convoy, and drivers are especially aggressive in the compact part of the lots. Your best bet would either be the free street parking in the back, or paid parking in the structure.
If you’re one of those who can’t eat a whole set of rolls by yourself, this is the way to go. With portion setting of 2-4, this is the way to introduce yourself to Japanese sushi.
I highly recommend this place. Make sure to , definitely download the app to reserve your spot in line because this place gets packed!
Food is served on a conveyor belt and a touchscreen ordering system. Your drinks are brought to you by a robot.
And the staff are friendly to answer any questions! What more could you ask for?
Oh earning points on the app for eating there?
Later, I found out they have an app you can use to reserve in advance, which probably would’ve helped. In any case, the wait was super long, the sushi was so good that I’m glad we stuck it out. It was worth the wait!
So here’s something else to add: this sushi bar had a kind of high-tech ordering process. Instead of a server taking your order in person and just bringing everything out at once, we were ordering piece by piece. Since we were sitting by the bar, we’d get each sushi order directly handed to us, and we’d place it on the table ourselves. It was a bit of a challenge for me because I’m used to just giving my order once and having everything brought out in a traditional way.
Also, if you’re planning to split the bill among friends, it can get really complicated because of how the ordering is done in little increments.
the service button to call the server was slow they were so busy, and it took them a while to come over. But, the sushi quality was high enough that I’d go back again; I’d just try to streamline the ordering process next time!
The revolving bar brings you rolls and nigiri. Now, as compared to other sushi bars I have tried, I felt that Kura did not have as much variety in either. The sushi was just ok flavor wise too. It wasn’t as well thought out and some of the nigiri didn’t look very appetizing to try. What I liked was that everything on the revolving bar was priced at $3.80. With the revolving sushi bars, you can rack up your bills quite quickly but counting the plates and knowing there was a fixed price, definitely helped us. Service was fast. They have other entree like options but considering that this is a “sushi bar”, we only tried the nigiri and the rolls. The wasabi was fresh and the highlight of the whole experience. We were out of there in like 20 mins.
I think there are better options out there but this is ok if you just want the experience of a revolving sushi bar.
