Just had sushi and sashimi here, and everything was so fresh and delicious.
The quality was amazing, and I really enjoyed my meal.
The tonkatsu was also perfectly crispy and really delicious. Highly recommend!

Truly, five stars. My partner & I live in Chicago. We have been to most of the well-regarded sushi restaurants in Chicago, as well as, most of the special omakases establishments. We make this trip because Kuni’s has very, very high standards. From the quality of the food to the way they treat their guests. This is a family run establishment and they take pride in their fish. The temperature is always spot on, the sashimi is never cut too thick, the sake is delicious.
They don’t make sushi joints like this anymore, which is why we trek out here 1/2 hour by uber when there are fancy overpriced and underwhelming omakase nearby. This establishment cares so much about their guests’ experience. The sushi is truly as great as any place in Chicago if not better.
We’ve been coming out here for 10 years. Only place in town willing to do authentic sake pours too. We love Kuni’s. Authentic all the way.

I went to Kuni’s Japanese Restaurant for my birthday and had an amazing time. I ordered the omakase with a side order of Otoro tuna. The fish was perfect and so was the rice. Portions were generous not like in some places where you get a sliver of fish when you order nigiri. The price was very good for 2 people. I am going back this weekend and I can’t wait.

Kuni’s is phenomenal- it has become my go to spot.
The staff is incredibly friendly, and I’m always glad when I see Nan as my server!
I’ve been waiting a while to post this review so that I could share photos of all the amazing food I’ve had this year.
Kuni’s is one of my favorite restaurants. I will always come back.

My wife, father and I visit Kuni’s nearly every week for dinner. We sit at the sushi bar except when space doesn’t allow. We usually end up speaking with our neighbors at the bar and find they have come from all over the Chicagoland area, including the city (and have been for many years). The fish is the freshest and most mindfully sourced I have ever come across. There is a warmth to the owners and staff that must be experienced. No shortcuts here, just consistently excellent, fresh sushi. Everything YUMMY!!! Authentic in every way. Enjoy!

My husband and I go to Kuni’s at least once a week and have been doing so soon after we moved to Evanston 10 years ago and made this wonderful discovery. We always sit at the sushi bar where we can see the action. The food and service is outstanding in every respect, and we consider June and his staff now to be part of our extended family. The overwhelming number of top reviews they receive are well deserved and the fact that Kuni’s has been an institution in Evanston for so long also speaks for itself. June is more than happy to answer any questions about the restaurant, history and tradition of the dishes. This place is the real deal. We have met many people who come in from the City specifically to go to Kuni’s and experience the same thing. Top notch.

I’ve been coming to Kuni’s Japanese Restaurant since the time of previous owner. The nigiri sushi is so authentically delicious that this is the only place I go for sushi and sashimi. The former owner trained as a sushi chef in Japan from a young age and prepared everything by hand, from the fish preparation to sauces and dashi. The current owner, a family member who worked with him from those days, has faithfully carried on his methods and spirit, and the quality remains just as wonderful today.

The restaurant’s website states that it is owned by a Japanese owner, but that owner has already retired and is no longer involved. This was not clearly communicated, and the actual experience did not reflect an authentic sushi or omakase tradition at all.
I’m writing this so others who are genuinely looking for authentic sushi don’t get misled like I did. The omakase was especially disappointing, and spending $250(ordered 3 omakases) felt like a complete waste of money.
