Great authentic Japanese food for a reasonable price. Everything they make feels like they put care into crafting each piece of food. The maki sushi melted in your mouth. The gyoza’s were clearly put together manually rather than bought pre rolled. The server was very kind and attentive. The atmosphere was pleasant, they were playing nice and relaxing Japanese music. There could be more decorations however I appreciate the simplicity of the environment.
I would love to see them have a combo option or special for students in order to compete with other places nearby such as sushi inn or koi sushi which both have great combo value options.
Overall a good experience!

Kuma restaurant is run by a friendly Japanese couple. The atmosphere during lunch was perfect for solo lining. I had their Kansai-style seafood okonomiyaki (関西風海鮮お好み焼き) and Japanese green tea for an extra $1.50. They are located on Dunbar Street and can be reached by taking bus 25 — Brentwood Station/UBC.

I write this review not because of the food quality but the way they forced tipping. I went to eat at Kuma restaurant on Dunbar and 18th and had a great meal, the bill came out to about $60. I went to pay and as I enter a tip of $1.50, the cashier questioned me if anything was wrong and canceled my transaction. I reply, nothing wrong. Then I proceeded with the 2nd transaction with the same tip amount and it was allowed to go through. When i got back to my table, about 2 minute later, the chef (maybe owner also, i am not sure) came directly to my table with my bill receipt and question why my tip was only $1.50 and that it should be at least 15%. He then went on to tell me my tip was not acceptable and don’t come back to eat at the restaurant. It is embarassing for the restaurant when a chef/owner, cashier would approach a paying customer at their table demmanding a higher tip. Tip is optional and should not be mandatory. Why was it pushed so hard on a customer. I have never encounter such a situation like this. It’s terrible that tipping culture has gotten this far. So if you are not willing to tip the “required” %, i would not reccommend this restaurant and please stay away. Terrible experience. Even if the food was good, I would never come back and will not reccommend any of my friends or people in general. Thank you

Hardest working couple and their kids on the West Side. Keep up the good work, I love the spicy tuna rolls and the okonomiyaki.

Cozy family-run restaurant with amazing food and reasonable prices.
Highly recommend the okonomiyaki which tasted very similar to what I had in Japan.
The fish was fresh and had a nice texture, and the portions were generous. Will come again!

I love three things about this restaurant. 1. Imported craft beer direct from Japan, 2. Hamachi nigiri, and 3. That cute short Japanese waitress with those beautiful eyes! Oh see you soon again 🙂

Great Japanese gem out in the Dunbar area. Must try the Okonomi-Yaki! Made from scratch and not the prepackaged frozen variety. One of the reasons i keep coming back. The sushi is great; it’s pricier than the average sushi restaurant but for good reason!

Very traditional small Japanese restaurant. The fish for the sashimi and for our sushi was very fresh – the hamachi nigri was pretty much hamachi toro! The okonomiyaki was also very tasty. All of the portions were very generous! The restaurant definitely gives off a family run vibe but service was still prompt and attentive! We will definitely be coming back!

Cozy quaint sushi place off Dunbar, reasonable street parking. Great service, server was wearing a kimono . Nice atmosphere, ambient music, family friendly. The food is priced right for the area. My Negitoro is 10/10! As was the scallop roll! The smoked salmon with mango, have a real nice smoked flavour… more the expected. Tempura was light and crispy… I would definitely come back.
