We tried Kozy Kitchen while visiting Boston and it ended up being a really nice surprise. We ordered the beef noodle soup and xiao long bao, and both were seriously good, honestly better than a lot of places we’ve tried in Boston’s Chinatown. We’re visiting from New York, so we’re pretty picky about Chinese food, and this place definitely delivered. The location is also super convenient on the BU campus.

Braised beef noodles: the soup is rich and sweet; the meat is made of beef, soft and delicious! Xiaolongbao is handmade, and the sauce is very authentic! The little brother is very handsome and the service smiles. Come to eat other flavors next time.

My cousin is studying at BU, so we met up at my first restaurant stop in Boston! We tried Kozy Kitchen nearby, shrimp with veggies, dumplings, milk tea, and water. We wanted to try a lot but made sure not to have leftovers, and it was totally worth it! The server was friendly, the food was delicious, and we finished everything. Definitely worth trying this Chinese restaurant right in front of the university.

★☆☆☆☆ I had a very disappointing experience here.

Before coming in, I called to ask about the lunch special for Mapo Tofu, which was listed online for $9.95. The woman on the phone confirmed multiple times that this was correct, that the lunch special was available, and that the dish was vegetarian. When I tried to ask more questions, she just kept repeating “yes, yes, yes.” Based on this confirmation, I placed an order and went to the restaurant.

When I arrived, the signage was confusing — outside it says Kozy Kitchen, the website says Beijing Cafe, and the phone was answered as Beijing Kitchen. I asked if I was in the right place, and instead of clarifying politely, the woman started yelling that it hadn’t been called Beijing Cafe in years. I apologized and explained I was just going by the website and phone information, but she kept raising her voice.

At the register, she suddenly told me the dish was $14.75 — far higher than the $9.95 she had confirmed on the phone. When I reminded her of our earlier conversation, she insisted I “didn’t understand anything” and claimed the phone information was outdated. She then showed me a paper menu stating the lunch special is $12.75 plus a $2 weekend surcharge. None of this was disclosed over the phone, and when I pointed that out, she kept yelling.

As for the food: the Mapo Tofu sauce tasted like ketchup mixed with soy sauce and a few peppercorns to fake spiciness. The rice portion was tiny. Honestly, it was the worst Mapo Tofu I’ve ever had. There were only two other people there — which, given my experience, isn’t surprising. And of course, the packaging was sloppy.

I came in wanting to support a small business and had no issue paying the correct price. What I take issue with is being misled on the phone, baited with a cheaper price, then scolded and disrespected in person. The entire experience felt dishonest, unprofessional, and hostile toward customers.

Don’t be deterred by the name; it’s neither a neighborhood breakfast joint nor a korner konvenience store. What it is a bit of a goldmine in authentic Chinese food. It’s decidedly unfancy — tables and seating are simple but comfortable, water glasses are quaintly mismatched and of different sizes — which really adds to the charm of the place. The family that owns and staffs it are welcoming and incredibly friendly (especially loving daughter Rixie), and that makes for great service. But you’re here for the food, and you won’t be disappointed in any way. The scallion pancake was light, crispy and delicious. Pork and leek dumplings were so terrific that we bought 25 (frozen) and brought them home. The noodles with meat sauce were outstanding, as was the chicken, egg, tomato and mushroom dish. These are wonderful recipes prepared fast and fresh. And, in the end, maybe 10-15% less expensive than other Chinese restaurants. Will definitely be back.

Food is decent. A little hole in the wall but the hong shao beef noodle soup was decent. Wish it actually gave me the brisket and not the shank, so it was a little misleading. The pork belly soup noodle broth barely had noodles. Overall, I’d visit again to try the other stuff. But maybe not the pork belly soup.

Order: Mapo tofu with rice.
Food: Super subpar. The sauce tasted oddly sweet—more like a ketchup + soy sauce mix than anything resembling authentic mapo tofu.

Pricing issue: I was quoted one price over the phone but charged a higher price in-store. When I asked, I didn’t get a clear explanation. It came off as predatory pricing to me.

Reviews may be outdated: It seems there may be new ownership, and the quality now doesn’t match the older high ratings—so the overall Google score feels inflated compared to my experience.

Bottom line: If you’re expecting authentic flavors and transparent pricing, I’d look elsewhere.

The food was decent for the price, as it’s relatively cheap around the area. The Mala mixed bowl was a bit too salty and spicy. The meatball stew with napa was better. Both made good companions for rice though!

The store looks outdated, but I guess they take plenty of take-out orders.
