What im assuming is the original stainless bar top is at the lower end with a small representation of the history propped against the wall.
It started off quiet early but gets busy and loud quick, small wait staff and they seemed to get distracted quickly with tables but still kept up in a somewhat timely manner. I feel this also affected when I had to ask for the cocktail menu a second time and my check wasnt split how i needed on 2 checks. The blank stare of acknowledged but not heard in the eyes.
The food, its excellent, but kept missing the actual mark by single details.
The fried pork ribs; fall off the bone, unable to pick up even with a fork deliciousness, presented well but the sauce was bland, almost tasted store bought as an after thought, needed some robustness to really bring it to life, rest of the dish, excellent.
Hanger steak; Soooo good so in the name of Ramsay why hide it under the arugula? The potato cake was just as good. Put the grass under the beef and butter the lobster tail which was also cooked delectably. Other than presentation, excellent.
Cocktails were a bit sweet for my taste but they were able to muster up something that better complimented the plate.
However, in lieu of, cupids milkshake for dessert. Tasty, but again missing that last ingredient. A dollop of whipped cream, a fresh strawberry on the rim and a mint leaf would of went a very long way, a red sprinkle rim would of been the top off. Youre literally calling it Cupid, where was the love?
The PB pie was hard to pass up to go. Toasted cream, gooey center, the Kraken caramel, good stuff and no fork to go….but i guess face first is really the only way to eat pie.
Would i be back? Probably. I went for the steak and even if it was buried in a jungle it was still that good.
There’s also a whole exhibit in the hall adjacent to the restaurant.
Friendship College is now closed, but there’s still a marker.
This town was also the first stop for the first group of freedom riders.
Well, we arrived on time….and there were 3 regular tables open, yet the hostess basically refused us these tables, saying those tables were reserved. I told her I also reserved those tables on Open Table. She basically said no. OK….I understand that sometimes restaurants save the best tables for their favorite regulars, or for bigger parties. But this is the THIRD time we’ve been to this restaurant WITH a reservation, WITH a specific request for a regular table (NOT the high top)…and the THIRD time we’ve been refused. In fact, the last time we were here, we reserved a regular table via Open Table, and when we arrived, they basically said that it was a super-busy night, and led us OUTSIDE for their street-side dining (THE worst so-called patio dining ever?!?)!! Frankly, we were livid then…and thought about asking for a Manager (but didn’t).
I am beyond disappointed with this place. I have given them several 4-star reviews in the past for their foods. Always short of 5 stars because of their inadequate seatings. I say this because the place has way too many high tops for a dining establishment. These small, high top tables and chairs are just not adequate for dining. They are more like bar tables (cheap ones at that)…for drinking.
In addition to these uncomfortable high tops, they are awkwardly placed, in a row…right in the middle of the restaurant (see attached pic!). BTW, ALL the seats in this restaurant are not cushioned, so uncomfortable as well! The place also has extremely bright lighting (the type you’d find at a barbershop!). Definitely not your ideal date-night ambiance.
After getting dissed for the THIRD time, we just decided to leave the restaurant…and headed elsewhere! Yes, we showed up for the reservation…but since we got dissed anyway, why not diss back?? It’s one thing if we came to dine without an appointment, but again, I’ve always reserved our table well in advance, with a very specific request.
I had no issues with their foods..but trust me, you can get foods at this caliber or better at Flipside, right next door…plus a long list of places in Charlotte. I don’t even like Southern American foods anyway! But the point is, it’s ALWAYS an issue getting a decent, normal table here. I’m not even talking about seating location…but just a BASIC, REGULAR DINING TABLE. That’s really not that much to ask for in a restaurant, but it seems to be an issue here…at least with us, each and every time!
I don’t care if I never set foot in this place again. I will make sure to spread the word…telling everyone about their preferential seating policy. Good riddance!
The hostess was welcoming and friendly, and our server, Izaiah was wonderful.
I had a pear martini and it was so refreshing, husband had a beer. Our food though definitely stole the show.
The trout 10/10 !!! Sooo flavorful, it was delicious.
The mussels were our favorite. Everything was so well put together, and the sauce it came in… heavenly! Our server was kind enough to bring us more bread because we just loved that sauce. Even the bread was warm and perfect.
We also had Brussel sprouts (not pictured) and those were great too.
Overall, wonderful place & delicious food and drinks! Definitely recommend you try if you haven’t already!
