It is a hidden gem. We randomly pick this restaurant. It was surprisingly better than I expected. The food was better than a lot of ,Japanese restaurants in Markham. The sushi is fresh. I like the sushi rice which has a good balance of vinegar. The pressed sushi is surprisingly good. The hand draw xmas card is cute. 10% discount for paying cash. It deserves more customers. In my opinion, it is more a sushi restaurant than Izakaya. Pls go there if you are in the area. Wish it all tue best.

The customer service is good, the food is good. The atmosphere is different. Would recommend for the first time experience and if you live closer to Pickering area. It’s worth the price if you don’t want to do all you can eat.

We ordered dynamite roll, unagi roll, small sashimi sushi and maki set, and takoyaki. All taste fresh and oishi. The best for todays dine in is the dynamite roll. We’ll definitely come back to try the other flavours

Came here for lunch with my friend and we loved the food and experience. The spot was warm, cozy, and extremely inviting. My friend had to say that all her food was delicious. She raved that the rice to sushi ratio was spot on. I had the Udon Noodle soup with added beef and it hit the spot. The maki spicy salmon was perfect. We will definitely be visiting again. Thank you for a wonderful first experience.

Koo Izakaya – My Go-To for a Reason
Let’s be real: finding a “regular” spot is hard, but Koo Izakaya is the only place I actually keep coming back to. It’s one of those rare gems where you don’t have to worry about whether the food will be “off” that day—it’s just consistently great every single time.
Why It’s My Only Spot:
The Food: The sushi is legit. You can tell they aren’t cutting corners; the fish is fresh, the portions are fair, and everything actually tastes like it was made with care. It’s high-quality without being pretentious or overpriced.
The People: The staff here are the best. They’re genuinely nice people who make you feel welcome the second you walk through the door. It’s the kind of service that makes you feel like a local, even if it’s only your second time visiting.
The Atmosphere: The vibe is just right. It’s comfortable enough to grab a casual dinner in a hoodie, but nice enough to bring a date. It’s got that warm, lived-in feel that makes you want to hang out for a while.
The Bottom Line:
If you’re looking for a spot that gets it right every time—good food, good people, and a good environment—this is it. Koo Izakaya is a staple in my life for a reason, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Koo Izakaya offers a solid sushi experience with fresh ingredients and good value overall. While nothing on the menu particularly stood out as amazing, the food was consistently good. The gyoza was a highlight, well-seasoned and complemented by a tasty sauce.

The restaurant’s decor is decent but leans on the darker side, which may not be to everyone’s taste. Service was efficient, and the pricing felt reasonable for the quality provided. If you’re looking for a reliable sushi spot that won’t break the bank, Koo Izakaya is worth considering.

Love their torched sushi! This time I tried the unagi torched sushi and it tasted great. I also enjoyed the crab salad. I love that it’s a quiet cozy place that I can enjoy a meal alone in peace.

Attended this place based on reviews. As east of the GTA is hard to find good sushi places.

The restaurant is a little hard to find as it’s tucked inside the square.

I attended around 630pm midweek and was the only customer. The atmosphere is a little dated as the building and surrounding buildings are quite old. The service was great, since we were the only customers inside.

The food menu isn’t what typically I see in other restaurants. With sushi boats or handrolls. It does appear more whitewashed and catered to locals (Pickering/Ajax rolls).

That aside the quality of fish received was fresh, rice was nice and not overly used. The squid was nicely cooked. Only the shrimp in one of the rolls I found overcooked, but didn’t bother me. All the portions were fair, and nothing was skimped on.

Overall the visit was pleasurable, and the price at the end of the meal was also fair. A bottle of hot sake was also a nice touch to everything.

Loved their fresh food and friendly service. We tried their butter squid, torched salmon, fire & white dragon rolls, and loved all of them. Highly recommended if you are looking for a sushi place near Ajax.
