I deleted my previous 1-star review from last year to post a new review for this year.

Kona Grill has some positives worth mentioning. They are open on holidays, which is much appreciated, and their menu is quite extensive, offering several options for different tastes.

However, the service experience left much to be desired. The servers clearly need more training in customer service. About 80% of the time, they walked by the table without asking if everything was okay, and the 20% of times they did ask, they turned away before you could even finish responding, which made it necessary to repeat requests and made the service exhausting for both sides.

There were no recommendations from the server—neither for drinks, food, nor desserts. In fact, at the end of the meal, the server came directly asking for the check, when I still wanted to order dessert.

We were a table of three, and all of us had soft drinks. When it was time to refill, the server left all the empty cups on the table as if collecting them. By the end of the meal, we had more than 10 empty cups on the table, including water cups, which felt careless and uncomfortable.

Additionally, the host staff could improve their attitude. They should smile more and avoid acting as if they hate their job or are forced to work, especially on a day like Christmas.

I understand working on a holiday can be challenging and that not everyone is in the best mood, but this should be communicated to management, not reflected in the customer experience. There were 4 or 5 other options for a Christmas breakfast, yet we chose Kona Grill expecting a better experience.

Some of the food was really good. We loved the BBQ chicken flatbread and avocado egg rolls. However the burgers were subpar and definitely not worth the price. The Happy Hour menu is a steal and available all day Monday.

Service was awful, with half the table’s meals coming out 7 minutes after the rest of the table. Waters were consistently empty and even the most basic of substitutions (sweet potato fries instead of regular) we were denied. We were sitting with empty plates and empty water glasses for about 20 minutes before our server stopped again. We then waited over 25 minutes to get out to go desserts brought to our table. It was a Monday night and the server maybe had 4 tables they were waiting on.

After a minor hiccup in our experience, the manager doubled-down to make sure we had an amazing time. Jason, the manager, is great at his job and knows how to run a great restaurant & customer experience.

Jessica was our server and was amazing. Super attentive and a positive, and upbeat spirit. Honestly, one of the better servers I’ve had before. Definitely kept us laughing, made our day better and we definitely need more people like her in the World!

The food was great, specifically the avocado egg rolls and double stack brownie for desert. I have no reservations in recommending Kona to others, if you are looking for a great experience, food, and service.

I’ve been waiting since Mother’s Day to write this review. We had a zero star experience then (IYKYK), wrote to Kona about it, they called me the next day and sent me a gift card to make up for it. It’s not close to our home (45 min) so we didn’t have a chance to go back until today. Today was a 9/10 experience at lunch time. I had low expectations, but to be fair everything was very good. Four of us had meals including 3 sushi rolls, lobster Mac n cheese, jambalaya (on a seasonal menu), French dip sandwich, filet, Brussel sprouts, angry edamame, and a watermelon margarita. Sushi rolls, edamame were 10/10. Lobster Mac 9/10. Filet 8/10 (good but not the best ever). French dip 8/10 and could have had more meat with less fat. And a couple pieces had that inedible fat. Horseradish and au jus were very good. Jambalaya was 9/10 and could have more than 1 piece of shrimp. But was very good. Margarita was 9/10. Brussel sprouts were 7/10. Texture mushy but flavor was good. Waitress was attentive, timely, and good recommendations with a great attitude. Bill was about $240 excluding tip. A little high for the volume of food but we still had some leftovers and all tasted very good. Overall was a 9/10

My daughter and I stopped in after Christmas shopping and enjoyed a wonderful sushi meal, topped off with a delicious butter cake for dessert. Our server, James, was fantastic—informative, pleasant, and so accommodating. We live in Martinsville, but we’d gladly make the drive again. Highly recommend Kona Grill in Carmel!

It was a pretty bad experience overall. Starting from after we sat down, the chair was dirty, and nobody came to help us until 20 minutes later. There were many items available on the menu online, but wasn’t available. They said because it’s January, so some items are not available. After we ordered, our appetizer didn’t arrive until 20 minutes later. We ordered our entrees, and our food didn’t arrive until another 30 minutes. The sushi I ordered was $20 with only 8 pieces on there and it was super salty. The server didn’t tell us happy hour starts soon after we order. The same sushi I ordered was only $6 on the happy hour menu. I was still hungry after finishing the sushi. The cheesecake we ordered was $15. It was so tiny, and it had a small piece of mysterious vegetable and sesame seed in there. It tells me that possible cross contamination and unclean dinnerware was going on in the kitchen. The restroom was filthy with water everywhere on the sink counter. The restaurant wasn’t even that busy when we were there. There were so many empty seats. We were very disappointed. I would not recommend this place to others.

Even that they have some kind of remodel happening, they host and the waitress were very attentive. The food was really good and tasty. They roll wasn’t anything wow but it tasted as expected and they price for the food was good.

I’m a little late in this post …my kids & I went in during boo fest at clay terrace on 10/18. It really wasn’t busy at all but the service still took soooo long. Even for someone to come get my drink order. And then over 40 mins to get my margarita!! It was actually insane bc they weren’t busy!!
Anyway, food took just as long. So I asked a server if they were short staffed and he said “no, why do you ask?” And then I told him that everything is just taking so long. Anyway, that all sucked lol UNTIL a young man , Antonio, happened to be closing the window by us …he noticed my daughter was upset that boo fest was closing bc of the rain ..let me tell you… He was SO kind when speaking w us and gave her SO much candy. And for that reason I might return. Great customer service skills Antonio. We need more Antonio’s!

* also, apparently there are mushrooms in the chicken & shrimp lettuce wraps now. So I waited so long for my food only to not be able to eat it.

Always a good experience when we come to Kona Grill. Christmas Eve menu streamlined, but broad enough for every taste. Service tonight was excellent, Jason was great – – friendly without being too intrusive.

Upon entering we were greeted warming and seated immediately. Jesse took care of us, he was nice, attentive and good. Our Orders consistent of lettuce wraps, which were very salt. However, the cheeseburger with fries were absolutely delicious, as was the French dip. We completed our order with a side of
steam broccoli and it too was delicious. The atmosphere was warm and very comfortable. Love it and we’ll be back.
