Reviews
As someone who doesn’t typically like corn tortillas, Komal’s dedication to the craft of masa is not lost on me. The fragrance from the tortillas really highlights all of their other ingredients, whether it’s the meat, cactus, or potatoes. The textures and flavors completely surpassed my expectations overall.
We got the tlacoyos, taco sonia, tacos de suadero, tacos de costilla, and the flor de calabaza quesadilla. We loved all of them!! The quesadilla is a sleeper hit and probably the most-loved overall with the sweetness from the squash blossom shining through, although if I had to pick a personal favorite, it would probably be the tacos de costilla with the caramelized onions!
The items are also surprisingly good for sharing, and that way you can try more things! There’s no line (especially compared to Holbox) even though they’re on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list and the service is very fast. Honestly, it’s just a matter of time before this place blows up!
I travel the country constantly for work and pleasure, and I have literally stopped eating Mexican food anywhere else because 99.9% of places use conventional, mass-produced ingredients that completely miss the soul of real Mexican cuisine. Komal is the rare, shining exception. Everything here is made with real, authentic, high-quality ingredients you can actually taste in every single bite.
I’ve worked my way through the menu — tacos al pastor, mole poblano, enchiladas, quesadillas, tamales, birria, even the salsas and aguas frescas — and every dish is consistently exceptional. The flavors are vivid, balanced, and unmistakably authentic, the kind of food that reminds you why Mexican cuisine is one of the greatest in the world.
Komal isn’t just my favorite Mexican restaurant; it’s my favorite restaurant in America, period. I sincerely hope they expand or at least stay exactly as they are so more people can discover what real Mexican food is supposed to taste like. They deserve every accolade out there — multiple Michelin stars wouldn’t even be enough.
If you care deeply about authentic flavors and real ingredients, do yourself a favor and come here. You’ll thank me later.
The zucchini cake was one of the best I’ve ever had. The street corn from the neighboring stalls is also amazing. It’s a perfect place to spend an evening.
The tortillas alone are worth coming here — they’re so fresh and flavorful. Definitely order the squash blossom quesadilla. I also enjoyed the chuchito, which is a perfectly balanced pork tamal that uses creamy cheese and acidic pickled veggies to cut the pork/masa filling. I also have to plug the molotes, which are served with a delicious black mole that, despite being a bit on the sweeter side, is rich and full of complexity.
Please support this fantastic business — I hope they’re a staple at mercado la paloma for years to come!
