Social Profile:

Thomas Kohnen enjoyed 22 years of pleasant family life in his home town of Bottrop, West Germany. He grew up like most kids in West Germany. For him and every other boy on the block, his dream was to become a soccer player until his coach determined Thomas had to have two left feet. He had normal grades and finished high school at age 15 in May of 1977. (Fifteen is the standard age for completing school in Germany.) In August of the same year, he took an apprenticeship as a Konditor (Confectionist) at the Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei. It was the biggest bakery in town and very well known for its disciplined training procedures. He worked as an apprentice for three years while also attending trade school. All the baked goods we purchased were fairly average, and none of them really stood out in terms of flavor.

That said, the atmosphere of the bakery is quite pleasant, and the prices are reasonable. It feels like a nice, relaxed place to meet friends, sit down, and chat without any pressure. If you are looking for a comfortable spot to take a break rather than a must-try bakery for outstanding pastries, this place works well.

The surrounding street area is also enjoyable to

Anytime we come to town we have to stop by our favorite bakery. They have the best pastries. They also have huge sandwiches you can order for lunch. The bakery is always busy with customers. The gift shop next door is also pretty cute.

From the moment you walk in, you are transported to a little German market. We visited two times this weekend. The pastries were divine, the deli sandwiches were delicious, and the whole atmosphere was charming. I recommend bringing your tourist family and friends here. There’s always a line but it goes through quickly. There are places to sit for a large group inside and outside. We are coming back!

The bread is very good if you love bread. They have good whole wheat, multi grain, sourdough bread.

I tried Grau, dense rye sourdough, very good sour and mild sweet with a hit fermented flavor.
And Vollkorn, crispy and sweet, with a test of whole grain.
They are both very good.

When you arrive grab and order form and fill out what bread you’d like and all the various topping options. The bread is fresh and delicious, but they do run out of various types as the day wears on, so get there early for the best selection. The also have planty of desserts and drink options, with an emphasis on German options.

My husband and I drove one hour because this place was recommended to us. We were very excited to try it. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing.

When we arrived, there was no menu visible. If there were menus, they were not available or we did not see them. It was our first time there, and we wanted to look at the options, especially the desserts in the display case. We had not even reached the dessert section when the employee was already asking what we were going to order.

We kindly asked her to please give us a moment because it was our first time, but she did not show any reaction or friendliness. She just stood there staring at us, waiting for us to order. We felt pressured and ended up ordering the first thing we saw.

My husband asked which cheesecake she recommended, and she replied, “I don’t know, I haven’t tried any.” We understand it may have been busy, but customers should be given time to decide, especially on their first visit.

We ordered four pastries and one coffee, and the total was $27. We were surprised by the price, and we were not given a final receipt.

When we ordered coffee, we were given an empty cup without any explanation. No one told us that there was a self-serve coffee station further ahead. We had to figure it out on our own.

Overall, we left disappointed. We had high expectations, but sadly the experience did not match them.

Kimmy and I hiking in tehachpi area. For lunch dropped by kohnen. Says bakery but more of a restaurant with lunch menu. Excellent German style bread. For lunch ordered salad with sliced ham and cheese. Shared with kimmy. Seating on patio. If full walk down street for more tables. Enjoy.

Delicious EVERYTHING! Great experience and friendly staff. The only thing I found off-putting was the self serve coffee set up. It’s a kitchy place so that may fit. I just didn’t like it.

I’m a fan of this place It fits with the small town feel. I got a very cute mug from here that I’m a fan of. I think that the prices are fair for the quality of what you’re getting. It can be a little crowded and hard to find a seat as well as a little loud in there but there is outside seating. Personally I’m a big fan of their soup I like getting the soup in the bread bowls. The employees are all very nice and knowledgeable as well.
