The restaurant itself was packed there were no tables available when we arrived at 6:00 however we could use the countertop to sit which actually turn out to be a great experience.
Watching chef Mike work his magic and carve up the fish was just a delight.
The ramen hit the right spots and my belly was very happy.
One of my friends tried the tuna belly that was slightly scotched and he was raving about it.
The fish are flown right in from Japan’s fish market so couldn’t get any better.
If you’re looking for a fabulous sushi and ramen in Salt lake then Kobe is the place.
I’m not a picky sushi person but I only liked 1 of the 3 rolls I got but that 1 roll was very spicy so I couldn’t eat it even though it was labeled as medium.
We will come back but just for ramen
Miso soup was, okay, too heavy for my taste like they were using a ramen base instead of a light dashi. The ramen was better, but I’ve definitely had better, and the noodles didn’t have enough bounce.
Teriyaki chicken was, okay, a little dry and undersauced for my taste. Somewhat middle of the road when compared to the teriyaki fast food segment. Although the fast food turnover is such that they tend to get the temperature right. Veggie tempura was a boring mix of yams with a couple of not fully battered onion rings. No carrots, no broccoli, no mushroom.
The rolls were… okay. Like all good sushi, the rice is critical. On the day I went, the texture was decent, slightly more dry than I target, but fine. But the rice had virtually no flavor of its own. Severely lacking in vinegar and, to my taste, sweetness. It was unable to contribute to the roll as a whole therefore letting the whole experience down. The eel component of the dragon roll was cooked well, but undersauced; like the eel was intended to be eaten alone, separate from the roll it was placed on.
Finally, the yellowtail nigiri. This was not okay. If a roll is a perfect bite made of 5 or 6 ingredients, and one is a letdown, you can still be… okay. But here we have 3 ingredients, fish, rice, and a little wasabi. The fish was good, the rice was not, and the wasabi placed under the fish was overpowering and strange. It wasn’t hot and tasted metallic. I blamed the blood line on the fish at first, but as I continued eating I realized that the fish was fine, and the rice had no flavor, so the culprit was the green stuff under the fish which simply tasted bad.
