Starting with the building. It’s old, dirty, dingy, and run down. On a Saturday night dinner rush, we saw: a shop vac and a bucket with tons of dirty/wet kitchen towels in the waiting area, tons of dirty/wet kitchen towels piled on the floor in the ladies room and a backed up toilet with a mountain of wet toilet paper piled in it (no out of order sign on the door though, why would you want customers to see that).
Then the customer service. We had a reservation for 7pm. Were seated at 7:40. Had our drink orders taken at 7:50. That is egregious.
The hibachi chef was very nice, but the vibe was just sad. The food was pretty expensive for portion size and quality, which would be ok if the vibes and the environment were on par. But they weren’t. Every 5 minutes, it seems like, the dining room was interrupted with loud drums (seems like a birthday tradition?) Funny, we did mention it was my daughter’s birthday, but they didn’t do it for us. Thank God, she would have been mortified!
I told my daughter, I’m so sorry I was that lady who was just taken aback at the trashiness of it all, but I’ll take her to Kansas City to a real hibachi place like Kyoto, where for the same money, she can have a much nicer meal in a clean, fun environment where the chefs at least look like they’re having a semi-good time, AND have some leftovers for lunch.
That’s a no for me dawg
Excellent service!
There was a birthday at the table next to us. They really go all out for your birthday. They come over with a drum and gong. They sing and have everyone else join in. Then they give you a giant oriental fan and take your picture.
The restaurant could definitely use a good cleaning. The floors were so sticky that after we stood up from the bench we’re we waited to be seated, our shoes stuck to the floor!
The bathroom floors we’re actually slippery. I think the soap dispenser was leaking.
My plate was dirty when we sat down so I gave it to the waiter to change.
It could definitely use some updating and a make over. But I would definitely go back.
I imagine most Americans will leave feeling they’ve had an authentic experience. Having been to Japan for a month last summer–in homes, in the country and city–it’s perhaps unfair to compare our family’s experience to Kansas. Note: they sat us at the same table as two other people. Credit where credit is due, that was authentic, if awkward.
The large portions, however, are obviously an accommodation to American excess. We barely ate half of it, and took the rest home for several meals.
They have a really big wide variety menu.
