I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of beef offered. Their banchan offering was about 6-8 which included tasty kimchi and Japchae was really good! I also made myself ramen with ramen machine(there were 4 machines) and was impressed with variety of ramen in stock.
Our server was very attentive and helpful. She was informative and seem genuinely interested in how we were enjoying the food and the experience. She also let me know they have been getting some bad reviews recently and would love our genuine feedback. So here I am, we don’t see any reason to leave bad reviews from our visit today, in fact we’ll be back despite it’s about 5 minutes longer drive compared to our usual K BBQ AYCE.
I have come to this KoBa spot multiple times and loved it. I like the menu options and I enjoy the buffet style.
However this last time I went, I had gone in a group of 4. One of my buddies found 2 hairs in his food that he got from the buffet area. We were honestly not upset by that since it was the buffet area where everybody grabs from. It wouldn’t be shocking if it was a customers hair since customers go in there and grab stuff on their own. We still assume it was random customers hair.
However, 15 minutes later when we got our meat, we ate 2 of our meats and started cooking our chicken. We saw a hair sticking up from the chicken and tried to grab it with the tongs, but it ended up being so incredibly long. It just kept pulling. It was so freaking gross. My buddy had to grab it with his bare hands because the hair stemmed between the chicken pieces. He threw it to the floor immediately and then we realized we didn’t have anything to show for it and ask for new meat.
We didn’t mention it to the staff, but definitely should have. We mainly didn’t ask because we already had a few things go wrong while we were there and the staff were not the greatest. They’re usually awesome but this time it seemed to be different employees than when I’m usually there. It started off with our kiosk tablet thing (where you order your meats) wasn’t working. It kept refreshing and getting rid of any progress in our order. So anything added to our cart, was deleted and we had to quickly order things before it refreshed. After getting annoyed by it we figured to just ask for a new one, but when I went up to talk to the employees, they seemed to just be talking (though they saw me waiting) and just continued while I waited. Once they talked to me, they kind of just shut down the fact that my kiosk might not be working by saying she got our order. Like… yeah after 10 tries lol. And we also wanted to make sure it didn’t accidentally order our stuff 10 times since it refreshed every time. Regardless, we didn’t end up getting a new kiosk.
Then, we needed a new grill right before the chicken incident. We pressed the Call Employee button. We waited a while and pressed it again. We waited a bit more and pressed it again. Throughout this time, no employees even came by or checked on us. We (I think) pressed it 1-2 more times before I decided to stand up and just ask since we had been waiting a while at that point. I ended up waiting at the front though, with no employees there. I saw they were in the kitchen all talking and 2 of the kitchen staff were dancing (which is sweet on its own but they’d been gone for so long).
I waited for an employee and eventually made eye contact with a kitchen staff and she had our server come out finally. I considered that they may have not been doing the change of grill request due to lack of clean grills, but she proved that wrong because she had one readily available and changed it immediately. It was just like, what’s the point of the button. Or maybe if the request didn’t go through, it could’ve been the kiosk not sending it (and perhaps a new one would’ve helped…). I’m also in computer science so I’m not just a Karen assuming the kiosk is faulty, I have personally worked on these systems before. I have also worked in the food industry so I am usually very patient and understanding with service! We still gave her a great tip regardless of the experience, but felt it was worth reviewing since it was a wild ride. Probably won’t be going back, because of the hair alone. So gross.
For reference, it wasn’t busy and there were 2-3 tables (of 2-4 people) seated at max (including my table).
They have some easy soup options, I really like the new Koba soup. Be warned, they’re really good but really hot. They come out in these black cauldron looking bowls. I had a hard time slowing down eating without burning myself but totally worth it. I might come here for lunch more than dinner now.
