Also the lighting was so bright and fluorescent that I really took away from any mood or ambience the restaurant attempted to have.
One complaint was the rice. It was dry and some tasted raw and crunchy. Zero quality control on the rice (2 bowls) and considering the type of cuisine this should be considered an important component. Bad rice can ruin a meal. It certainly took one star away. Should have been 2 stars but the rest of the food was quite good.
I would say this is NOT authentic thai but more of a fusion thai experience as far as the tasting menu. Certainly had the coconut milk, kaffir lime, lemongrass, cilantro, etc. background notes but was not dominating like authentic thai food. Missed thai heat completely as far as spice as well. Definitely tuned down to accommodate a larger range of palates I would assume based on location.
Grouper was excellent (highlight), rice crackers and coconut dip were a great way to start the meal, calamari was good, tuna was only okay, steak good, tom yum soup very good (hard to miss) cabbage was a bit oily for my wife but I liked it, beef short rib was only okay, if it had some Thai spice kick would have elevated it more, chicken was not memorable, the salmon was in a sweet curry but we prefer one that is spicy but still was quite tasty. Sticky rice was off in consistency but was yummy.
For a thai place not authentic and missed on the higher spice notes. In fact I would say the spice was not even there. Usually at a more authentic thai food establishment the first question is how spicy can you handle. Thai scale 4 or north American 9 is what we like. This was a zero as there was no spice but as mentioned all the other notes were therebfrom thai cuisine and I believe that is probably what they were trying to achieve.
