Unfortunately our experience left us uninspired and disappointed.
First the good… The oyster chowder is tasty although a bit more potatoes than I’d like. I also almost broke a tooth on an oyster pearl that should’ve been caught before the meat was added. Secondly the filet was good, but $48 I expected more than 2 shrimp that were haphazardly harpooned to the top of the steak – so much for presentation. Service was attentive and friendly.
Now the not so good…. The bar was so noisy with various pieces of equipment running that it completely killed the atmosphere. Now we understand why we were the only ones at the bar.
The tuna appetizer while tasty, the portion was tiny. 5 small pieces of tune for $18. It was supposed to be sesame crusted but we didn’t see any sesame seeds. Just wasn’t worth the price of admission.
The single crab cake entree while tasty with lump, the crab cake was super small and appeared to be +/- 3oz, it wasn’t much bigger than a golf ball or lemon wedge. The smallest crab cake we’ve ever seen served in or around Annapolis area.
The desert topped off the experience with undersized cuts or pie – they appeared to be cut from a 6″ pie pan. The key lime pie filling tasted good, but the crust was soggy.
Needless to say Knoxies left a lot to be desired given the price point, there are better options.
I was very impressed with the use of local, fresh ingredients in creative ways. Everything I tasted was DELICIOUS, particularly the PEPPER JACK CREAM CORN. I can’t recommend this dish enough- it’s richly flavored without being heavy. Somehow, the corn remained crunchy, even in this creamed form. Fantastic.
I had the STEAK FRITES and I was quite impressed with the cut of meat, its tenderness, and the perfect medium rare cook.
The parmesan fries were actually the one disappointment for my meal- they were not crispy enough.
I tasted my table-mate’s PAN SEARED SCALLOPS risotto and the scallops were divine. As were the garlic mashed potatoes- perfectly whipped and so light! The PARMESAN CRUSTED CHICKEN was wonderful too.
We shared the JW BUTCHER BOARD as an appetizer and it was varied and fantastic. The peach chutney was a particular stand-out.
Dessert was very good as well- Cookies & Cream Smith Island Cake, Caramel Smith Island Cake, and corn Crème brûlée. All were excellent.
The atmosphere felt upscale without being too stuffy.
The service didn’t QUITE match the quality of the food.
Our table accumulated dirty plates and utensils without anyone ever removing them. Also, we had to request clean cutlery for dessert.
None of that will stop me from returning, but it’d be wonderful if they could elevate the service to match the quality of the food.
The food was great and made to order. I ordered the braised beef tips and my wife ordered the burger. The beer/cocktail/wine list is also pretty decent.
The service was mixed. While our waiter was very nice, we didn’t see him very much.
All in all, we were content and would be willing to give it another shot if it was suggested to us, but I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to go by myself.
For my appetizer, I got the crab meat gazpacho that was delicious and marked as gluten free. For dinner, I had the gluten free beet salad and the garlic mashed potatoes that were also gf. Would totally come back here again when back on Kent Island.
