Established in 2019, Knotty Barrel Rancho Penasquitos is a locally owned, family and dog friendly bar and restaurant where you will always feel at home. Enjoy our locally-sourced menu with a twist, a wide array of domestic, imported and local craft beers as well as a full bar. In addition to 4,000 square feet of interior dining space is our 2,000 square foot outdoor patio complete with fire pits. It was a wonderful environment, sat outside and staff even adjusted overhead umbrella, good came and was delicious. One order was incorrect, had one burger name for 2 different burgers, one for brunch and one for breakfast. We ordered the breakfast one and got the other. Was glutton free and tasted amazing. With tip came around $78 for 1 appetizer and 2 entrees. Appetizer was huge and took home doggie bag. Highly recommend and will be back.

The papas bravas were a great dish. The Yukon potatoes maintained a good temperature with a crisp skin. They were complemented by a refreshing yogurt sauce with pickled onions / peppers, cheese, and cilantro.
The sausage trio offered partially sliced andouille, kielbasa, and apple gouda sausages on skewers. Three sauces accompanied the sausages with some grilled sourdough slices. For me, the beer mustard did the best job of cutting through the richness / saltiness of the sausages with its bright, acidic flavor.
The bar offered a decent selection of drinks / cocktails. The bottle of 2023 Josh Cabernet was nice with the appetizers.

While on a weekend get away my girlfriend and I stumbled across this place and man are we glad we did. We started with the Papas Bravas appetizer which was amazing. You could tell that it was more than just a “potato” dish, this thing is well crafted which comes through as one of the most complete bites we’ve ever had in an appetizer. It was rich, creamy, sweet, salty and just a touch of heat!
We then decided to split the carnitas sandwich with a side of the Cajun style fries. The fries were definitely tasty but they didn’t hold a candle to the sandwich. We were again surprised with a very well composed experience.
We will definitely be back when visiting San Diego.

We’ve been here several times. The outside fire pits are nice. Everytime we’ve gone it’s been a fairly cold night and they open all doors and the outside walls to the bar which makes the inside as cold as the outside. The beer selection is just OK. They have some good apps, like the pretzel. But we find the main stuff just OK (and they have a fairly small menu). So it’s better as a drinks and app place rather than a full restaurant.

We immediately placed order for fried pickles and other appetizers.. the waitress was not expecting us to order appetizers.. she only asked for drinks.. then waitress kept pressing us to order and we had just received our appetizers— once we were ready to order food — she was no where to be found. Other team members came to help us (they deserved the tip). Worst smash burger I’ve ever had— fried pickles were under cooked. Took over 15 mins to refill glass of water… about 20+ mins to get our check. Waitress looked like she didn’t shower and scuffle looking. She was very rude until it came time to “leave a tip”. Usually tip heavy— left small tip due to service received. Very sad because we had higher expectations due to our friends giving us high recommendation to go there. Never again!!! Too many wonderful places in San Diego.

I got the Spicy Chicken Sandwich with chili lime sweet potato fries and a couple drinks. The sandwich honestly disappointed me because it was labeled as spicy and it was not AT ALL. The drinks were nice and the sweet potato fries were so good that I would return just for them.
Also, we saw a couple dogs on the patio so the place is really dog friendly.

Friendly staff, delicious food, and a spacious outdoor area that’s great for kids and dogs. Plus there’s plenty of TV’s both indoors and outdoors. Great for watching the game and letting the kids burn off some steam. Need to get their attention? Order some churros and you’ll be golden.

I had a fantastic experience at the Rancho Peñasquitos Knotty Barrel today, and I want to specifically shout out our server, Alex. He was absolutely phenomenal—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. He checked in at all the right times, made great recommendations, and made sure everything was perfect without ever feeling intrusive. It’s rare to get service that feels both professional and personal, and Alex nailed it. He truly elevated the entire experience. I’ll definitely be back and hope to have him as my server again.
