Following PT, after a 2 week hiatus because my PT was out of town, and I needed to see the orthopedic surgeon for another follow up, it was off to breakfast.

I grew up in the north end of Tacoma and spent a lot of time in what is now called The Proctor District. It was time to give Knapp’s a visit.

As you can see, Knapp’s has been in business since 1938. The restaurant is huge with a full lounge, 2 dining and a large banquet area. It has been updated since the last time I ate there, and the tables, chairs and booths have been updated as well.

There was only person working. While not full, she had enough to keep her busy, so she wasn’t able to get to us right away. Our coffee arrived at the table and was cold. It took a few minutes to track her down to request hot coffee. She made a fresh pot and brought the hot coffee to us as soon as it had finished brewing.

We had to wait for water, but as I said she was working alone and I could tell she was hustling and doing the best she could to keep up and being a business owner I know how hard it is to find help.

I ordered the chicken fried steak, scrambled eggs, upgraded to the country potatoes, and sourdough toast. Ray ordered The Monster and stayed with hash browns thinking they only came in his omelette, and an English muffin.

Our breakfast arrived fairly quickly and was hot. I thought the $3 up charge for chunked up deep fried potatoes a bit much. They were OK but nothing to write home about. My chicken fried steak was good. The gravy was bland with a fair amount of pepper. The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy.

Ray’s omelette was gigantic and loaded!!! Had I seen how crispy the hash browns were I would have ordered them instead. I am not a fan of soggy undercooked hash browns. Typically when I request crispy, they arrive burned. These were just the way I like them.

Breakfast was good but there was nothing outstanding about the flavors. This is your basic older type restaurant with decent sized servings but no flare to the flavor.

We may come back to sample some of the other menu items. The food was good. It just wasn’t great.

I’ve been coming to Knapp’s for about 30ish years. Came here when I was in high school at Wilson high School a bunch. Since we own a business in the same building, two doors over, our family eats here a lot now. I’m glad to see it’s actually kept its quality. Prices aren’t too bad and the staff is friendly. They really turn the people out, while we were there. I think probably about 40 people got served and paid and left.

Quite the spot. I’m glad to see it survived to all of the ups and downs of this country and economy.

Glad to see them still representing the 253.

Reminds me of yesteryear, good ole family restaurant ! Cozy for sure , booth sitting, a single 7am waitress bright and ready to serve ! Good food , a little dissapointed that english muffins are used instead of biscuits and the sausage gravy was actually cold ? The rest of the meal was quite delicious and a hot chocolate or two w/ whipped cream was a delight ! Knapps street front location is impossible to miss yet either because of window tinting, dim interior lights they never appear to be open ? And they always are.

Stop by for a late lunch this afternoon, had a pair of wonderful clubhouse sandwiches. The turkey is slow roasted and the sandwich is perfect. It’s been a few years but I’ve been eating clubhouse sandwiches at Knapps for over 30 years. I highly recommend you treat yourself!! There was enough left over for dinner this evening. All of the staff were attentive and wonderful as well.

We drive from Olympia are to eat breakfast here! We have a favorite waitress who is always smiling. The last time I got The California omelette and paid $2 extra (like everywhere, they had to charge more) for a pancake. I NEVER order pancakes but since I tried One of theirs, it is the only place I get one! The Swiss omelette is good too. Husband had the chicken fried steak.

Such a fun little diner and bar. Great staff and an engaging new owner. The regulars are friendly and are welcoming to new patrons. They have a nice happy hour menu that has a nice variety of snacks. Whiskey Wednesday is a great way to try new whiskeys, and surprisingly the mini corn dogs are a great palate cleanser when you’re tasting whiskeys. Bring your friends, but be aware, the bar is cozy.

Overall first time eating breakfast here, and the last. Food was okay, very bland. Orange juice was watered down so much it tasted like bad water. I didn’t get my full order. I reminded the waitress the one time she checked on us and she said oh, be right back with that. Needless to say, I finished what I could of the meal and still no toast. The service was below par, the food… eh, and was more thankful to be leaving than coming.
