An unassuming little place with excellent, authentic udon. I ate here opening week and after ordering, learned that they did not yet have a credit card machine. The staff were very accommodating and went out of their way to let me pay via Zelle. The udon noodles were exactly as you’d expect with a good chew and slippery texture. Broth was flavorful and tempura well seasoned and crispy. I also had the karaage which was delicious and as well. A true hidden gem for the neighborhood!

I was excited when I saw this place in my area especially since it advertised “handmade udon” I came in and tried it and I loved the udon here! I lived in Japan and I have to say this is very authentic, the broth was delicious, the noodles were soft and fresh and they make the udon in-house! I spoke with the owner who was very kind and hardworking. Overall great quaint place to get your udon fix. Finding fresh udon places that actually taste good with high quality ingredients is hard to come by, come here you won’t regret it!

Sits next to Batteries+, wouldn’t have seen the sign from afar.

Really good, don’t think I know if another udon place around here. I like udon better than ramen since the broth is thinner. Kind of like pho.

Agedashi tofu was different than I was expecting, had a thin crispy layer around it. Still really good.

Karaage was just like karaage you might get at a hole in the wall place in Japan. Like one of those, order from a vending machine at the front sort of places. The kind that gives you a ticket and you give it to the cook.

Nikutama udon was exactly what I was expecting. Tantan spicy pork also exactly what my friend wanted. An added egg was delicious and creamy.

Seems like the eggplant was removed from the appetizers. Little sad we missed it, was hoping it was like the one at Sagami. Guess I’ll never know.

I’m surprised this place isn’t as popular as rairairamen (just for people who want a less heavy broth or less salty soup). A similar small menu, so you know they specialize in what they do.

Winter is soup season!

I started off with some Barley Tea. I’ve never had it before, and it had a unique taste. It had a slight upfront sweetness that you get with a quality black coffee. It was something nice to warm up my chilly bones.

As an appetizer, I ordered the Karaage. It was lightly breaded dark pieces of boneless fried chicken that was served to what I assumed a Japanese mayo on the side. I really enjoyed the light batter, and the chicken was perfectly seasoned and moist.

I chose the Tantan Hot Udon and added a spring egg with it. This was the real shining star. The udon noodles are scratch made in-house, and you can tell as it differentiates itself from store-bought or your average take out spot. The noodles had a nice chew and spring to them. They are a great compliment to the broth, which tasted a bit unique to me. I had to ask what kind of broth it was, and to my surprise, it is a vegetable broth! While you see some dark red in my broth from the added chili crisp/oil, it was not very spicy, but it had spice to it! The poached egg was a perfect addition as the yolk added a pleasant silky creamyness to the crumbled pork.

Overall, I was extremely satisfied with my meal. This is a small, very clean restaurant with pleasant Japanese music playing in the background. I am looking forward to trying some of their other offerings on the menu

I think this place is mid. The word mid describes this place perfectly. I am not sure which part of these dishes were homemade but it is supposed to be homemade. Karaage was the best dish. It was crispy but the chicken was bit dry. Udon was ok. The frozen grapes are complementary. Lastly, service was mid because there was one person doing everything. He was cooking + taking orders + serving. This was Friday late lunch so I don’t know how that would work for them in the long run but the guy was nice.

I usually don’t like writing reviews but I am moved to do so here because it is really a gem hidden in a rather blah looking strip mall. I want its business to thrive so that I may sample Kiri’s delicious udon for years to come. The highlight and star of the menu is really the handmade udon that the owner had told us he learned how to make first hand while he studied in Japan. The broth is light and soothing, a contrast to the sodium laden broths at ramen places everywhere these days. You cannot get fresh made udon at other restaurants in the area. You’d probably have to go north up near NYC metro area to get anything similar. You can’t go wrong with any of the handmade udon options.

I’m super picky with my udon after living in Japan for 4 years. This place has AMAZING udon! I usually get disappointed when I order udon in the States but this place is SO GOOD. From the perfect chewiness of the noodle to the flavor of the broth. Everything was perfect! Love the simple menu as well! Highly recommend this place!

It’s a rare to find an authentic Japanese restaurant that specializes in Udon in south Jersey. The noodles are made from scratch, the broth has the right amount of umami, and the portion was deceptively more than I thought which is a plus.
We went when they opened on Sunday and I believe the only worker was the owner, server, and cook because I saw no one else there. I will be back to try more and support the business!

This place is a hidden gem. Homemade udon noodles are amazing! The soups are fantastic- generous serving with beautifully seasoned broth and fresh ingredients. Can’t wait to come back and try a karaage rice bowl. If you like ramen but want something maybe a bit less spicy/salty, visit Kiri Udon!
