Kim’s is located in Fairfax it true Love Letter of Vietnamese cuisine
Imperial Beef Soup and Pho Kim stand out with their intensely flavorful broth and high-quality beef slices. The Roll Sampler offers a good combination of summer rolls, spring rolls, and shrimp triangles, providing a satisfying texture and a comforting, home-cooked taste that makes this cozy restaurant a must-visit.
I checked the website and was pretty impressed with how the dishes are photographed. So we went there to check it out!
My first impression when we walked in was that it is charming and traditional. There are live plants everywhere inside the restaurant, you can tell there was some thought put into the design of the space to make customers feel welcomed and relaxed.
They have a nice bar that looks clean though I haven’t tried any cocktails yet.
My husband ordered ‘Pho Kim’, beef broth, rice noodles, filet mignon, topped with cilantro, onions and scallions.
Mine was a ‘Caramelized Claypot’, salmon/prawns/baby ribs simmered in coconut juice, caramelized onions. Served with steamed rice.
So in my opinion this dish was very salty and oily. The amount of rice didn’t compensate for the salmon and saltiness at all. And I didn’t actually see any ribs!?
I asked the waiter why the dish was too salty? He said that in Vietnam they eat less protein and more rice because most of the population is poor. So you don’t taste as much salt while the sauce is naturally very salty!
I seriously doubt that because of the YouTube videos I’ve seen on how various Asians cooked and mixed all kinds of meats with seafood and overeat. There are no rules. My recommendation is don’t order this dish. $22 for a dish using farmed salmon is not worth it.
On one hand we do look for authentic cuisine, however it seems reasonable to us that any excess such as use of salt or worse, MSG, should be changed to use healthy ingredients with nutrition on mind.
My husband likes his Pho the cut of the meat was great without sinews, the broth tasted good when I tried it.
Still better than the ‘Pho Cyclo’ restaurant we tried before not worth a review.
We’re planning to go back again to try other dishes and I’ll post more.
By the way I noticed our waiter always washed his hands after cleaning tables which is so important nowadays in the COVID-19 era since we’re moving from pandemic to endemic.
I wasn’t impressed with the hallway leading to the restrooms where piles of supplies mixed with children’s high chairs were stacked and degraded the otherwise aesthetic decor. I think it should be cleaned up so customers have more space to walk without bumping into things, especially a larger person or someone in a wheelchair.
They had plenty of parking, and a beautiful outdoor patio as well.
Overall, a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
The Cha Gio as perfectly fried and the filling was very full of pork, carrots, and taro. I’ve had lots of cha gio in my lifetime, and though this is a little pricy for only 2, this was very good. The bun Bo hue was way Way WAY better than I anticipated. The broth was full of flavor, lemongrass, and umami richness. The meat in it was also very good. The bun thit nuong was also so good. The grilled pork was flavor full, the nuoc mam fa was perfectly balance, and everything in the bowl complimented each other perfectly.
I still believe that this restaurant is a little on the pricy side, considering Eden Center has great hidden gems with fair prices, but I was impressed with the improvement. I think this restaurant is a great place to introduce those who are not too familiar with Viet food. But for the price, I’d go to my tried and true spots.
Considering how overpriced it has become, along with the consistently poor service and the declining condition of the interior, I won’t be returning. There are plenty of other spots in the area that offer great Vietnamese food at reasonable prices and in a much nicer atmosphere.
