From all the video’s circulating on social media, it does live up to the expectations and the taste was 10/10.
However, prior to arriving – we tried to make a booking as soon as they opened that same morning because we were a big group. Unfortunately we were told they don’t take reservations and we should come however they did are most busy at 13:30 so the lady suggested from 15:30. The lady who we assume was the owner, was not very friendly, it almost leaves a bad taste in your mouth and brings you very close to asking, like do you want the business or not!
We arrived just after 16:00. The gentleman who seems to be the owner, met us outside while we waited for someone to attend to us. Not long after, a table was arranged for us and the magic happened.
The food was absolutely amazing & lived up to all the hype.
The waitors aren’t too helpful, almost like it’s an effort when we asked them for anything.
What stood out the most for us, was when we wrapped up & paid the bill, we glanced over at another table and saw that the table was reserved for a booking at 18:30. That left us very puzzled as the lady specifically told us they don’t take reservations.
It is unfortunate as you almost get a sense that you have to belong to a certain religious group in order to get the “full pleasant experience” .
Also double check that you get those “dipping sauces” which is mentioned on the menu, when ordering the seafood boils. You get so sidetracked & distracted when the seafood boil arrives at your table because the owner does a little showcase for the table, you kinda just get right in it. We never got the side dipping “secret” sauce and lemon butter sauce.
However I will say again.. the food was tops, but I might just opt for a takeaway next time & enjoy the food in the comfort of my own home.
However, the second time was not so great. Firstly, it was a mission just to get in touch to make a reservation. Nobody was answering the phone, and even when I sent messages, they were read but never acknowledged or replied to. Eventually, I went in person and made a reservation manually. I even wrote down what I wanted in hopes that when we came on the day, it would be easier for us to sit down and receive our food.
The seating experience itself is really amazing, and the concept is great. However, there is a lot of waiting involved. Unfortunately, the second visit came with more delays. When the food eventually arrived, it was only one portion. I had ordered the seafood boil and added extras to make sure it was enough for two people, as my friend and I were sharing.
The portion was noticeably smaller than what we received during our first visit, so I queried it and was told that the prawn boil was still on its way. By the time the prawn boil arrived, we had already finished the first half of the food, and even then, it still didn’t look like much.
I understand that some waiting is expected, especially when a seafood boil is made from scratch, but the bigger issue was the inconsistency in portion sizes. On our first visit, the portion was generous enough that we even had leftovers to take home. On our second visit, it was not nearly enough — essentially one egg per person and one corn per person.
Kimono Sushi & Thai consistently delivers an exceptional dining experience. The quality of the food is outstanding, with the most delicious sushi, expertly prepared, and beautifully presented. The Thai dishes are equally impressive well-balanced, flavourful, and authentic in taste.
What truly sets this establishment apart, however, is the hospitality. Both owners are remarkably generous and welcoming, creating an atmosphere that feels warm, personal, and genuinely inviting. Their hands-on approach and attention to guests contribute significantly to the overall experience.
The menu offers a diverse selection that caters to both traditional preferences and more adventurous palates. Portion sizes are generous, and the pricing reflects excellent value for the quality provided.
The atmosphere is comfortable and well-suited for both casual dining and special occasions. Service is professional, attentive, and efficient, ensuring a seamless visit from start to finish.
Kimono Sushi & Thai is a highly recommended destination for quality sushi and Thai cuisine in Johannesburg. I look forward to returning.
and I didn’t know there was a restaurant that serves them right on my door step! It was a cool experience. The taste does get repetitive after a while, seeing as everything is cooked together in the
same sauce. The sushi was lovely! However my only downside of this restaurant is the service. We ordered both our sushi and seafood boil together when we sat down (6pm). We were told the seafood boil would take an hour to prepare and we were fine with that. However we only got our boil at 7.56pm. That’s basically 2 hours. They also lost our bill somehow? We didn’t get the lemon butter sauce or secret sauce that came was supposed to come with the dish. Make sure to order in advance so you don’t have to wait long.
The food was absolutely delicious and fresh. The sushi was well-prepared, flavourful, and beautifully presented. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients.
Shout out Precious as well as Sphe, for both their outstanding service. Everything arrived on time, and the overall experience felt smooth and enjoyable.
I would definitely recommend Kimono Sushi & Thai in Emmarentia to anyone looking for fresh sushi, and a peaceful dining experience. I’ll definitely be coming back again!
I recently celebrated my birthday at Kimono Sushi & Thai, and the owners truly went above and beyond to make the evening special. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles and a beautifully decorated table complete with a birthday banner – such a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the night.
The service was absolutely impeccable – attentive without being intrusive, and every detail was handled with care.
Now, the food… wow! The seafood boil and prawn boil were simply to die for – perfectly cooked, full of flavour, and generous in portion. I’d also highly recommend the chicken strip starters and the fried chicken dumplings – both packed with flavour and cooked to perfection. And if you love sushi, do yourself a favour and try their prawn sushi – fresh, delicious, and great value.
If you’re looking for a place with incredible food, outstanding service, and owners who genuinely care about their guests, Kimono Sushi & Thai is an absolute must-visit. I’ll definitely be back!
P.S. book during the week to milk your experience – they get busy over weekends.
We were seated but already you could tell its either the impression given is that its late and you ordering now or I just dont want to serve.
We sat waiting menus for almost 20 minutes watching the same lady who seated is hand out menus to another table who came in after….which is when I actually started to see here that service is an issue. I called the manager/owner not sure to state we have been waiting for a menu and mind you time is already been gone and also with him its like the impression you get is “its late and we have to cook now” which for me was uncomfortable to a point I nearly walked out.
I think service needs to be a main point here, as we come in we want to feel welcome and warm i guess being in this industry makes me see these things, staff needs to be trained on customer satisfaction.
We had 1 waitress for finally attended us and she was very sweet, unfortunately I didnt get her name although thank you for making the remainder of the night good.
The food was good, seafood boil after more than I few bites flavors would be repetitive although its cooked well. Crumbed or Panko wings were tasteless although the saucy ones we had were great as well at the dumplings and bao buns those were epic.
Please train the staff, I belive if the first encounter is good the rest of the night at your establishment would be great. But if from the get go someone feels unwanted because of time then it’s not going to be a great experience.
