I ordered their miso eggplant lunch set, which came with six side dishes. The salmon sushi was surprisingly amazing, the salmon was creamy and buttery, it literally melt in my mouth! That was one of the best salmon I’ve ever had in Melbourne! I will definitely come back for more!
They also added some roasted grains which almost tasted like popcorns on top of the grilled eggplant. I loved the extra crunchy texture of the dish, and the eggplant was also decent. Their beef sashimi side dish was superb! The ponzu sauce that they used was perfect balanced, I absolutely enjoyed it.
Besides, the kingfish crudo was refreshing and well-seasoned, and their coconut beef curry showed their innovative flavour profile that suits me perfectly.
Overall, I had a wonderful dining experience here. Booking is recommended for weekends.

We came for a B.Day party and since we booked more than 6 people we had to take set menu. I can tell you it was worth it, not cheap but worth the money. The restaurant changed the menu to accommodate some dietary requirements and we enjoyed the calm and relaxed atmosphere. One small caveat – please make the aircon work better.

I had a really enjoyable evening at **Kicho in Black Rock* tonight.

The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between the compact charm you’d expect from a Japanese restaurant and a clean, Scandinavian-inspired decor. It feels neat, calming, and intimate – just right for a relaxed dinner.

The staff was warm and very attentive. The owner was approachable and clearly passionate about the food and the menu. It feels like he creates a positive and supportive environment, which comes through in the service.

The food was thoughtful and well put together. There’s a good variety on the menu, and the flavours showed care and creativity. Everything we had felt fresh and well-balanced. The yakitori dish was quite generous!

Pricing felt just right for the quality and experience. I walked away feeling like I’d had a special night out – a well-executed dining experience just around the corner from home. Highly recommend!

Just had the most lovely meal at Kicho. We are so lucky to have this restaurant in black rock. We have eaten here four or five times previously and always enjoy.

Today they had new dishes we hadn’t had before- the sweet potato croquette and octopus dish was incredible- flavour profile was insanely delicious- smoky and creamy and sour? – I wanted to scrape all the sauce from bowl! Also the prawn gyoza was a very different interpretation of a ‘gyoza’ and was wonderful, again full of texture and flavour.

Value is great for the set meal $59 for 6 dishes.

Thanks Kicho!

The chefs are incredible here. I’ve been a handful of times and their latest menu has been my favourite. Such a great local place close to the beach but with the dining standard of a cbd restaurant. You get so much food in the feed me menu so come on an empty stomach.

Amazing food – we got the degustation menu and it was great – there was so much food that kept coming out and when we thought that we were done – the mains came out
Everything was great and they even catered for a few changes to suit dietary needs and the chilli sauce was amazing.
Service was mostly good – but some staff members may need more training

There are quite a few Japanese restaurants around Melbourne; but none like this. What a breath of fresh air.
Small restaurant with authentic charm and attentive staff. Not rushed (like some reviews have stated) but staff keep the wheels moving. Other reviews have suggested that the portion sizes are small – they’re not. The portion sizes are appropriate, and very fairly priced. When those dishes come out – wow. Every dish coming out of the kitchen was a piece of art.
We would travel a LONG way for Japanese food like this.

Amazing experience dinning at Kicho, had the Feed Me 6 course dinner. It felt like a fine dinning experience, the six course is a combination of is on offer on the menu . Every dish is a unique flavourful with a burst of fusion between Japanese and Western cuisine. Enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone. It is next to Black Rock beach which is a bonus, had a nice walk after dinner.

Parking was easy and the restaurant was easy to find.

We did the 6 course set menu. Great selection of dishes and the food and presentation was superb and surprisingly reasonably priced.

We also had a selection of sake which were all good quality

Desert was limited, we had the cheese cake which was better than I expected.

Such a shame the service was unbelievably slow. Even when they weren’t even that busy. Drinks were forgotten about multiple times. They gave one of us water and not the other. They took cutlery and didn’t replace it. Desert we had to go and grab someone after asking being given the menu then being forgotten about.

Such a shame really because otherwise it was really good. Will probably go back in a few months and hopefully the service will be a bit better.

Decided to try this place as its nearby to my local suburb and was pleasantly surprised – this restaurant is a great addition to South East Melbourne!

Food was fantastic, we chose the 6 course feed me option. A great range of meals were included, plus they allowed changes based on allergies and preference which I found amazing. Each dish came with it’s own flair. Portion sizes were slightly on the smaller size and our Gyoza was delivered luke warm. Besides this, I was stoked with the food overall.

Drinks were reasonably priced and quick to be delivered to our table. Staff were extremely approachable, informative and friendly.

If possible, I wouldnt recommend bar seating as it was a very narrow table and had me concerned of spilling food/soy sauce on my pants.

Would 100% return again if table seating is available.
