Prior to coming here we knew this place was on the more expensive side to other thai restaurants, but on the flip side, the portions of each dish were very large! The pad thai was enough to share between 2 people and the papaya salad was a little bit on the spicier side which I personally enjoyed.
I like to judge a place based on two things, Pad thai and Papaya salad. The flavors of the food were alright. It didn’t wow me but it was not bad. The crispy pork belly was very dry and hard to bite thru at times.
Overall, I would not be rushing to come back but would definitely come back to give it another shot if friends/family want to try it and I would like to try the Kor Moo Yang (grilled pork neck).
You can find their updated menu with prices at their website.
Here’s what we ordered:
Crispy Pork Belly
– Pan-grilled pork belly until crispy served with rice powder and plum sauce.
Chicken Pad Thai
– Traditional Thai style pan-fried rice noodles with egg, tofu, bean sprouts, and green onions, served with fresh bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, and lime.
Som-Tum Salad
– Shredded green papaya salad with chili, tomatoes, long beans, and peanuts in a lime-based salad dressing.
The food was absolutely delicious — you can really tell they use fresh, quality ingredients. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. I especially loved Larb, kor mu yang, papaya salad and tom yum soup.
I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great food, a comfortable vibe, and top-notch service. I can’t wait to come back!
One of the dishes we ordered was the Massaman Curry, but the curry was extremely watery—it tasted more like red oil than curry. My wife really disliked it, so we brought the dish back in our own bowl to let the staff know.
Unfortunately, the way they handled it was very disappointing. The staff was dismissive, and when we explained that the curry didn’t taste like curry at all, they responded by asking, “What do you expect curry to taste like?” We ordered another Yellow Curry (and paid for it), and requested a refund for the Massaman Curry. The server refused, saying that she could not sell the returned dish to another table — which is the first time I’ve ever heard a restaurant use that as a reason to deny a refund.
This will be our last visit to this restaurant — not because of the food, but because of the terrible service.
The only issue we had with the Mama noodle is some fish pieces were hard and we’re not big fans of Mama noodle but that’s just personal preference. The crispy pork belly was good, 100% ordering this again but without the noodles.
Khao Soi.. Same thing, very rich, very creamy, loaded with flavor and good amount of noodles. This place is among the best so far and more generous portion than some others but we’d sacrifice quality over quantity, you get both here.
I’ve never had pork curry like the Hang Lay pork curry and there’s a theme here. It was super savory, the meat was with tender, and it went well with the sticky rice. It comes with three different sauces, the lighter fish sauce based one and the tamarind? based one were my favorite.
I elected to put some rice in a small bowl, add meat/sauce, then add one of the condiments. Might not be the correct way but that’s how I would do it again. Delicious.
Even the Thai tea had good tea flavor, too many Thai places just make it sweet with a light tea taste, they aren’t trying hard enough, this place does and it comes through.
The chefs standards are high and they don’t seem to compromise on long simmering which develops full, complex flavors. Please don’t ever change.
Quality first!!!
High Google ratings led us to Khaosan Thai on a Friday night, and this choice proved absolutely worthwhile. Arriving an hour before closing, we found a bustling restaurant with only a table or two available, always a reliable indicator of quality food and local popularity.
We ordered an ambitious spread: pad see ew, basil fried rice, red curry, and the intriguing Thai omelet with crab meat. The pricing hit that sweet spot of fairness, averaging around $30 per person, reasonable for the quality and portion sizes delivered.
Service was impressively efficient, with dishes arriving promptly despite the full dining room. The portions were perfectly calibrated, generous without being overwhelming, allowing us to enjoy the variety we’d ordered. What truly distinguished Khaosan was the kitchen’s masterful restraint with oil. Too often, Thai restaurants drown dishes in excess grease, but here the balance was impeccable, allowing authentic flavors to shine through clearly.
The thoughtful condiment pairings elevated the experience further. The Thai omelet arrived with sweet chili sauce that complemented the delicate crab perfectly, while the noodles came with a separate chili oil that added depth and heat to the already delicious pad see ew.
When we encountered an issue during our meal, the staff’s response was exemplary. Their professional, attentive handling of the situation demonstrated genuine commitment to customer satisfaction, a quality that distinguishes good restaurants from truly great ones.
Khaosan Thai has firmly established itself as another San Jose gem worth celebrating and revisiting.
Bathroom: 3.25/5
I had to hold the toilet seat up in order to piss but other than that decent bathroom
Customer Service: 3/5
Wish we had a spoon
Ambiance: 3.75/5
Very tropical vibes, everybody wearing Hawaiian tshirts and decor was tropical. A little bit cramped in here though
Food: 3/5
Food was decent. Green curry was creamy, and I liked it. Fried rice was just okay. Not much was in it tbh. Lowkey found the portions a bit too small.
Wow: 0/1

Went on Saturday night again. Food was good (was being rushed), since they have to close at 9PM. On top of that a service charge of 20% was added to the cheque by default event though we had 4 ppl in the group.
