It was tasty food! The only thing i’d say was that one of the staff was a bit rude but that’s not a big issue. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend making a reservation as I made one but we still had to wait a for a table to be empty. Very good food and the decor was nice so evens out the slightly bad qualities.

My partner and I came with high expectations for our first visit, but the overall experience was unfortunately underwhelming and simply didn’t exceed our hopes. We feel there are better places available locally.
The main issue was with the sushi preparation, particularly the quality of the rice. It was improperly cooked; it was quite firm and dry, meaning it simply wouldn’t bind together correctly. Consequently, when we tried to pick up the pieces, the rolls immediately lost their shape and completely fell apart. This made enjoying the sushi difficult.
A particularly unpleasant incident, however, involved a lapse in hygiene. We discovered a hair directly in the wasabi. When we politely pointed this out to our waitress, her response was quite unprofessional. Instead of offering an apology or a replacement, she simply laughed and commented that it must have been hers. We received no apology or attempt to rectify the situation, which was disappointing.
Beyond the sushi, the ramen was just alright, gyozas are very good, but overall, the quality of the meal was average and the service was poor. Given the preparation issues and the lack of courtesy shown by staff, we cannot recommend this establishment, as we know there are better options available.

Cosy Japanese restaurant in the heart of Stockbridge with a calm and serene ambiance. Ordered the salmon maki – which was good – and the katsu curry. The katsu curry, I have had better from other Japanese restaurants, the sauce was a little too rich. The staff are very attentive and friendly!

My favorite sushi spot in Edinburgh! I’ve been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. The food is truly authentic, the atmosphere feels straight out of Japan, and the service is always fantastic. The place is beautifully decorated, and the dishes are just as stunning. Every visit takes me right back to Japan, I absolutely love returning whenever I can.

We went Kenji for dinner. First of all, the atmosphere of the place is very pleasant and relaxing. We ordered chicken gyozo, takoyaki, volcano roll, and rainbow roll. We were quite pleased with the flavors of each. I thought the sauce on the volcano roll was a bit too much, but the rainbow roll was quite refreshing. The staff was attentive and friendly.

Fantastic food in a lovely atmosphere. Staff were great and attentive, food was well presented, and it had a lovely vibe. The sushi is excellent, as are the condiments and sides. Big props to the Salmon teriyaki, dragon rolls and aubergine miso. Nice sake choices too.

it’s hard to tell since the place is a little hidden away but this is such a pretty wee restaurant! gorgeous japanese interior, music at the right volume and the service has always been amazing.

my friend and i have been regulars here for a year and somehow the food gets better every time. incredible sushi, tempura, desserts, you name it. the matcha tiramisu (now sadly discontinued) was to die for- kept us coming again and again. the sushi is all so yummy and complex, really interesting flavour combos. i also haven’t seen many places in edinburgh who do shoyu ramen so for people looking for that, this is the place! happy that they’re no longer cash only too!

As an Asian who’s been to Japan 5 times, this is the real deal.

It’s not perfect of course, but it is good enough to be considered sushi to me.

Ingredients were fresh, high quality and well executed. Areas of improvement include the neta being a bit too tight, as well as the neta and Shari’s ratio being a little off. It’s high praise, because there’s nothing too else to fault honestly

Prices are expected slightly high for something of this quality, but really it’s very reasonable and you can’t complain

Second visit:
Eel nigiri was absolutely superb. The ratio is much better than the maki

Sashimi quality was good too, if I were to nitpick, the hokkigai was a bit mild, the akami was just a tad fishy, the rest were good and overall rather high quality. Also, 16pcs they really didn’t shortchange us in terms of the quality, no cheap cuts, so if you want to get sashimi the platter is definitely a good option

Negitori was stunning. It’s masterful how the different layers of flavours come tgt, w the incredibly creamy texture of the negitori and strong umami. I find it comedic that it’s executed at such a high level but the knife work is a little lacking, but that did not distract from how good the roll was.

Even more impressed on my second visit than my first. Again, I have almost Japanese standards, and I really was not expecting to be impressed at any sushi place in Edinburgh.

Third visit:
Don’t takeaway the sushi, either the quality today wasn’t good or more likely even after 45mins it’s nowhere near as good

Fourth visit:
The negitoro futomaki really isn’t anywhere near as bomb as when we first had it, severely lacking in umami compared to the first time. Unagi nigiri is still good

From the moment I tried Kenji sushi I loved its sushi taste and freshness, but lately when we order delivery we are getting thinner rolls, with too small quantities of salmon/fish. The quality is being affected and I dislike what they are doing, getting so cheap. Also the squid rings most of the times are too spicy and several times too hard. Please Kenji return to your previous splendor! Next time I’ll add a photo, this time I didn’t think of it, but the salmon was soo bloody small 🙁

We came here with high hopes after a recommendation from others and good reviews online. Upon arrival the person greeting us asked my boyfriend to repeat the name on the booking 3 separate times… which we found extremely odd and frustrating. Once she finally understood us we were taken to a table in the back. The back area is quite dingy and sad, you’re next to the kitchen and the staff who are stood there the whole time dealing with delivery orders and walking back and fourth, so not really any kind of atmosphere. The real downfall I felt was how they handled a question about an allergen. The maki rolls are not on the allergen menu, which I had to view online, because they didn’t ask if we had any allergies when we were sat. When the waitress took our order she asked another member of staff if a certain sushi roll was dairy free after I had asked, to which she responded “should be fine” after a quick flick through an allergen matrix, which wasn’t really reassuring. If you have any kind of allergy I’m not sure if this is the place, because they never clarified if it was a serious allergy etc or informed me about dairy handling in the kitchen which I normally have else where. We ordered a couple sushi rolls and a couple small plates and everything came one at a time and it felt like an eternity from when we ordered to when we got our final roll. The food itself however was really tasty. Would I go back – no, probably not. The service really isn’t great, and the back room is sad. But I might order takeout.
