This is my and my family’s first trip to Gatineau, and the Kato restaurant was certainly worth our 4-5 hour drive!
Our Order: Brussel Sprouts, Angry Chicken, Flaming Scallops, Kato Special Maki Sushi, and Wagyu Sliders. For drinks, we had the Bonsai Mocktail. For dessert, we had the Pannacota and the Tempura Cheesecake with Matcha Ice Cream.
Flavie offered to make the two sliders into three so our table could share! It was a very thoughtful offer that we took, and every bite was delicious! My personal favourite were the Brussel Sprouts. The vinaigrette and char made an amazing combination that I was blown away by. Another highlight of our night were the literally flaming Scallops that made lovely pictures for us to take back. We eat sushi a ton back home, but the Kato Special Maki was definitely a unique Maki with an outer shell I have never tried before and tasted scrumptious.
Overall, this has been a beautiful start to our stay at Cartier Hotel and Spa Resort~
They gladly accommodated gluten-free and even changed the tamari.
It wasn’t busy at all, which surprised me. Especially considering Koena is always packed. This place deserves way more attention. It’s seriously underrated.
This manager needs to be fired or have a serious talking to and extensive client service training. There were so many ways he could have dealt with that situation but he chose to be agressive and disrespectful.
The food was also not good. I ordered shrimp fried rice and they brought me the veggie fried rice (not a big deal). They took it away and brought back the right dish, but the shrimp was cold, translucent and slimy. Every single person in our group of approx 20 who ordered steak flank said it was cold. The menu is VERY limited. I thought it was because we were a large group and perhaps it was a set menu but it was their actual menu…so you had better like sushi.
On our way out the bartender (the old guy guy..not the young one) asked how our experience was and when we told him he was equally rude. He seemed to take it personnly and started attacking us in his broken English saying that we should just get out if we didn’t like it. I felt like I was being punked, I couldn’t believe it.
I strongly recommend that if you’re planning a group outing you do not plan it here. It was awful and I will never go back. I’m also writing the hotel to tell about our experience because some of us had rooms there.
The only good I can say about our experience is the the waitress and the girl who was helping her (the same girl who brought the push sweeper and got scolded for it) were both very good and worked really hard. Their efforts were greatly appreciated!

30 minutes for 2 glasses of champagne, 1.5 hours for rainbow sushi and not a single update or apology the whole time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully done, but the service? Awful. It wasn’t even that busy, so there’s really no excuse.
