TL;DR:
One of the best food experiences I’ve had. The quality of the fish all tasted very fresh in the hand rolls and crudos. The plating was aesthetically pleasing. It was neat watching the chefs craft the hand rolls right in front of you. The staff were friendly, and our food came out relatively fast. The seating area is small but creates an intimate atmosphere. It is pricey, so I would save this place for special occasions.

Long Version:
The Five Hand Roll Set was an excellent way to try multiple hand rolls. The Negitoro (fatty tuna) was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The Kani (blue crab), Spicy Sake (salmon), and Hamachi (yellowtail) were tasty too. The Avocado wasn’t anything special, but that was expected. Each roll was wrapped in crispy nori seaweed that added a crunch.

The hamachi in the Hamachi Crudo was tender. The soy sauce it was served with was light. The Maguro Crudo (bluefin tuna) was served over sweet yellow watermelon. Both dishes had a slight kick from the serrano, although the Maguro tasted spicier.

I’m glad our waitress recommended the Walu Walu paired with Furikake Rice. The Walu Walu (Escolar) had a really smooth texture. The Furikake Rice was simple but flavorful. My only complaint was that the rice was warm rather than hot. These two dishes really helped fill us up.

I wouldn’t order the Kinoko and Sunomono again. The Kinoko is usually all white, but ours had some of the brown mushroom caps, which messed with the look of the plating. Otherwise, the yuzu vinaigrette was fine, but I don’t think it fits a mushroom dish because of the sourness. The Sunomono is a typical Asian-style cucumber salad. Most of the flavor is in the sauce, so you need to mix everything well, or it tastes plain.

Excellent hand rolls, amazing food quality. I tried all of the rolls, plus the bluefin crudo. All amazing, this place rivals the quality of sushi I experienced in Vancouver a couple of years ago (that’s a good thing). BTW the uni roll may look half-full, but that was after I took a bite/things shifted. Very fresh and delicious – rare to find good uni a couple thousand miles from the ocean.

tl;dr If you like fresh sushi, go here. You absolutely will not be disappointed.

One of the best restaurants in KC. Staff were friendly and promptly sat us. The place is very small, so definitely make reservations, although it wasn’t very busy during the lunch hour. The food was amazing. My favorites were the Kani and Wagyu (definitely worth the splurge) hand rolls. I also really like the Kinoko. Highly recommend!

We had the 4 handroll option, a few crudo, and the special: hamachi collar. Everything was spectacular (especially the crudo!) except the collar. We had to really dig with our forks to get any decent bites out after we were told it was delectably “fall of the bone tender,” so that was disappointing. I’m also surprised it wasn’t comped from our bill since we weren’t able to eat even half of it. The other reason I only give four stars is the waitstaff, while super friendly and hospitable, had lacking knowledge of the fish they were serving. When I asked for a description of one of the white fish on the sashimi menu, all I was told was “ooh yeahhh, that one’s really good.” I expect more from the staff of a restaurant I am spending $150 at. Props to the sushi chef, as all of the raw plates were AMAZING!!

My partner and I are from Iowa and we will always make the time to drive to Kansas City (2.5 hours) JUST for a dinner date at Kata Nori and drive back home afterwards. That’s how great everything is.

We’ve gone about three times in the past two years and they only ever improve. Only issue is it’s hard to find parking in that area. Still worth the walk !

Bougie Japanese bar type restaurant. The raw dishes radiate craftsmanship and restraint, the flavors were subtle and fresh. Everything I tried was good, but the baked escolar and the hamachi collar were most memorable and had the most value.

The music was whack, they played early 2000s dance music like Fergalicious. It was a real missed opportunity for classy Japanese Western fusion music. (They could have played Nujabes, and some ghibli hits at least)

I had high hopes for Kata Nori, but the experience was a real letdown. The food came out as more of a mush than anything else, with no real texture or freshness. Some dishes even had a fishy taste—and that’s definitely not what you look for in sushi. On top of that, a few items were so overly spiced that you couldn’t taste anything else, making it hard to enjoy the meal at all. We didn’t even finish our dinner, which says a lot. The drinks were good, and the service was fine, but when the food itself is this disappointing, it overshadows everything else. Definitely not a place I’d recommend nor I will be returning to.

Kata Nori is simply amazing! Every hand roll we tried was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully made—truly a sushi lover’s dream. The atmosphere is cozy and modern, with a U-shaped bar that lets you watch the chefs work their magic right in front of you. On top of that, the staff is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel completely welcome. A perfect spot for anyone who wants incredible food, a great vibe, and top-notch service.

Bummer, it’s all about the food. Kata Nori looks so cute from the outside and based on the reviews, I had to go in. After some clumsy service and selecting from a disappointing drink menu featuring basic tequila and prosecco – the food came, and all was not completely lost. The food IS delicious. The hand rolls are meticulously made, and the fish is superbly fresh. Everything I had was delicious – fatty AND medium fatty tuna? Amazing. But the dirty dishes piled up, the second drink was never offered , and it soon became clear they needed to turn over my seat. I would say, order for takeout, but they don’t allow that – something they tell you at the beginning which is foolish of them and off-putting to us. I hope they work out the kinks and remember that Michelin stars are given because of the mastery of food, but they’re also NOT given when the service fails to match it.

Absolutely fantastic place. It’s at the level of the best sushi restaurants in LA. Ingredients are so fresh and the preparations are fantastic. This is a must-try in Kansas City.
