Karie’s Kitchen shares space with a local hotel that was recently changing ownership and has a lot more invested into the rooms. It is also a breakfast place that is open fairly early. Because of this, you might see tourists or blue collar workers getting their morning cuppa before the day starts. You’ll also see people enjoying their food in an almost private setting because of the fact that the restaurant is on the back side of the building.
If you are going to get inside seated service, it makes sense to wait at the host station, if you’re ordering to-go or pickup, go on inside until you see a proper coffee shop. The number of gluten-free options, including the breakfast sandwiches, means I have to become a local customer, that’s the only way I will be able to enjoy every item.
The breakfast sandwiches that Karie’s makes should be in a modern version of a Cinderella movie, they are beautiful, and should be cast as the morning sandwich that Prince Charming or Cinderella eats before they take on the day. They get a lot of their gluten-free baked goods from AJ’s Bakery, a local GF baked goods company, and Kerry’s is the only place I know of where you can get GF cinnamon buns. (Start drooling response, FLAVOR).
Anyways, when you’re in RI, and you’re touring our famous Route 1, definitely check out Kerry’s Kitchen on a morning, and say hi to the morning dew on the grass. It is a pleasant experience and a definite enjoyment!
Coming up route 1A through North Kingstown, we saw a big sign saying nothing but “Restaurant” so I hit the brakes. What we found was Karie’s Kitchen (formerly Jiggers South).
This quaint little farm-to-table eatery is a hidden gem. Emma, our server from Idaho by way of Michigan was pleasant and engaging. She explained the owner Karie’s culinary philosophy of locally sourced Rhode Island ingredients supporting fellow small businesses in the Ocean State.
I had one of the lunch specials: Cup of Chowder with the Fish ‘n Chips plate. This decision was in no small part due to Emma’s description of the lightly fresh Haddock. Dad’s choice was cemented when he learned that breakfast was served all day.
Lunch was delicious. The chowder was creamy with the right mix of clams and potatoes. The haddock was indeed quite lightly breaded allowing the flavor of the fish to come through. If I had to find some criticism I would say the tartar sauce was a bit heavy on the mayo and light on the pickles.
On the way out, we actually found the “Karie’s Kitchen” sign. Karie — You need a better sign! But thanks for the great lunch!
