Karibu Zanzibar Cuisine – A taste of Alkebulan * Karibu means “Welcome” in Swahili. Alkebulan is an ancient name for the continent of Africa. Some sources say it was used before the name “Africa” became widespread. The word “Alkebulan” is often said to mean “Mother of mankind” or “garden of Eden.” More than just a restaurant, we are a celebration of memory, migration, and the ancestral wisdom carried in every recipe. Each dish on our menu is a love letter to Alkebulan. A place of origins, resilience and unity. Come experience the tastes of Zanzibar!

The food was so so so bad! So bad I cannot find the right adjective to describe it. We ordered several dishes: The ugali and spinach were pretty good, and so was the muhogo. The nyama choma beef was clearly boiled and then pan fried. There was nothing roasted about it. No char marks anywhere but there was oil on the plate. The chicken wings that came with the muhogo were a frozen pre-made item like you get at the grocery store in the freezer section with hot sauce poured over it.
The biryani rice was so bad it deserves its own comment: It was simply boiled rice with some saffron-colored stuff thrown on top. No oil, no herbs , no spices, no nothing! Heck, it wasn’t even basmati rice. Boiled basmati rice with oil and salt only has more flavor and aroma than whatever that was. The beef that came with it looked like it had spices but we could not taste them. It was really tasteless and bizarre. The kachumbari had no flavor….at all. How does one make flavorless kachumbari??? At some point we genuinely felt (and hoped) that we were getting pranked. I am a good cook, and I cannot give such food to someone for free, let alone try to charge them.
We had ordered sambusas but they were never delivered, so I cannot comment on their taste or quality.
Overall this was by far the worst food experience that we have ever had. We are food lovers who try a new restaurant at least once a month and this is the only place we have sworn to never go back to.
We left still hungry but thankfully they are located across the street from Juba restaurant. We walked into Juba and they righted all our wrongs. We were more than happy to order enough food to eat there and take some home to wash away any memories of our experience at Karibu.
As for the 5 star reviews, I swear they were either paid, doing it to support the business, or they went at a time when the quality was different than what we got.
They very friendly
