We had an amazing experience at Kappo Sono. The service was very good! There is a strong sense of ceremony in the dining experience, which really makes it feel special and thoughtfully curated.

The presentation of each dish was beautiful, and the food itself was delicious. Portions were also very generous — we left feeling completely satisfied and happily full.

Highly recommend!

I recently visited for my birthday. I haven’t seen Chef Chikara Sono since his days a Kyoya. We had the Kaiseki meal and it was amazing. We went for the sake bottle, but next time I’m going to try their pairing. Every dish that was presented it was delicious. As we walk in, we were offered champagne and were seated at their patio, great view. Later we took out sit at the counter and enjoy an excellent gastronomy meal.

Have been here quite a few times, a hidden gem located in a penthouse! Their menu is consistently great highlighting seasonal ingredients, hospitality is unbeatable and the experience has always been superb. Chef Sono San is warm, funny and welcoming. Bonus point — they have an extensive list on their drink menu, as a seasoned nihonshu lover personally I think they curate the best sake menu in New York City.

An unforgettable night at @kapposono! ✨ If you’re craving an elevated kaiseki journey, this spot is unbeatable. With 15 exquisite courses crafted by Chef @sono_chikara_kapposono and 3 stunning desserts by @norie_uematsu, every bite felt like a piece of art. The nearly 3-hour dining experience was nothing short of luxurious perfection.

At 350 per person, it’s definitely a splurge, but worth every penny. Plus, they send you home with tea and pastries for the next morning—because why should the indulgence stop at dinner?

Only 12 seats per night, so book early for your next special occasion. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Kappo Sono for our 10th anniversary, and it was, without a doubt, one of the best meals of my entire life.

From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. The entire team made us feel incredibly special and truly attended to every detail, making our celebration feel intimate and memorable.

The food itself was beyond excellent. Each course was toon us back to Japan. We opted for the drink pairings, and they were nothing short of amazing, perfectly complementing and elevating every dish. The service and history we received for each pairing was exceptional.

If you are looking for an intimate, world-class dining experience where the food is superb and the service makes you feel like royalty, look no further. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

I’m so glad Chef Chikara reopened Kappo Sono. It was impossible to get a reservation at his old location so I never got to try it. It is much easier now in this bigger spot. So much thought, effort me precision is put into every one of these dishes. There were 10 savory courses and 3 dessert courses. We were so full and had to take the last 2 dessert courses home. Everything was delicious but the mackerel was way too fishy for me and the wagyu was a bit too fatty. Other than that a perfect meal. They also include a tin of cookies and a mayo for all the guests to take home.

Stellar experience, and one of the city’s best.

Went here for the final dinner of 2025. It will truly be a tough one for 2026 to top.

Tasty and daring food offerings from the masterful Sono-san, an abundance of booze (pairing is definitely worth it), and an attentive and knowledgeable staff is what you’ll get if you take the plunge.

Standouts of the night’s experience included sashimi and the best ankimo this side of the pacific.

The staff advised that they would be moving to a new location in 2026, so keep your eyes peeled and your appetites ravenous.

Beautiful cuisine and friendly, super- professional service. Their seating may seem to start on the early side, but that’s partly to appreciate the beautiful location, and also to give you time to find them and get situated for the main event. (It’s a speakeasy setup where someone invites you in from a nondescript entrance.)
