The full progression was impressive:
• Kohlrabi Crudité and Pickled Daikon
• Shigoku Oyster with Douglas fir oil and pine ponzu
• Seaweed Soup (dashi base with wild foraged nasturtium)
• Ink Noodles with Monterey squid (we added the Perigord black truffles, so incredible!)
• Luna Koshihikari Rice with Black Cod (highly recommend adding the caviar)
• Cast-Iron Dumplings with A5 wagyu short rib
• Umpqua Valley Lamb with artichoke
• Eton Mess with citrus and locally grown pistachio
Everything course was 10/10. The Ink Noodles and Black Cod Rice were my favorites of the night. Thoughtful, high-end, and exactly what the Palo Alto food scene needed.
It’s a small operation, but one worthy of a night out.
It’s a little tough to find, it’s a side entrance, sandwiched between Dumpling Time and RH.
The experience was truly amazing. I would rate the food an 8.5 out of 10, and I am quite particular about food quality. Most of the dishes were excellent, especially considering this was only their second week of operation.
Overall, I’m looking forward to returning.
Kappo is the latest restaurant from the Omakase Restaurant Group and the newest fine dining restaurant at Stanford Shopping Center
Having been to their other affiliated restaurants, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but knew there would be a focus on “kappo dining,” meaning a seasonally-driven meal cooked entirely in front of guests
Kappo features an open kitchen and is helmed by Chef Nik and manned by Chef Griffin
What unveiled during the multi-course meal is almost like a version of Culinary Class Wars on Netflix with locally sourced ingredients, cooking techniques befitting the best Michelin-star restaurants, and creativity influenced around the globe yet very much rooted in the abundance of California
It is still very early in 2026, but I left the meal thinking that Kappo may very well be the best meal I have this entire year…it’s that enjoyable and what they’re doing is that refreshing
I’ve always loved watching cooking and getting a front seat is a privilege and an experience. This made a perfect date night and we’re truly lucky to have this destination on the Peninsula. Hopefully we get to return soon
Tasting Menu ~ $140 // Turnip Crudite, Pickled Daikon, Shigoku Oyster / Seaweed Soup / Ink Noodles, Monterey Squid / Luna Koshikara Rice, Black Cod / Cast-Iron Dumplings, Brokaw Avocado / Umpqua Valley Lamb, Cabbage / Eton Mess, Citrus
Kappo (Palo Alto, CA)
The general manager at Kappo is equally impressive, with phenomenal wine knowledge that elevates the entire experience. This is a fantastic restaurant, and I am excited to return and see how it continues to grow.
Perfect atmosphere for a lively but elegant meal.
All the food was delicious though the rice bowl was a bit too rich. The service was good though they did spill some sake when pouring and I was surprised they didn’t replace it so they must not have realized
I also wish they were more tactful about the supplements. In Japan they would lay out the ingredients in a wooden box and mention in before taking it away rather than shout asking who wants each time which i found a little tacky
Hope they make some adjustments cause this place could be a real game changer for the area
