My friends and I visited here for some good food and good times, and it ended up being just that. The menu contains many traditional Malaysian and Singaporean food items, ranging from nasi lemak to sambal eggplant to chicken satay, and pretty much everything tasted great with good flavor.

The sambal flavor defined the eggplant dish and since you can’t really go wrong with sambal, the dish was just great. The chicken satay had good sauce that helped enhance its flavor. The nasi goreng was seasoned very well, with all the seasonings infused into the rice. The rendang beef had very tender beef in terms of texture, and the curry lemongrass sauce evidently defined the flavor, making it an overall very enjoyable experience. Finally, the lamb shank that came with the nasi lemak was also very tender because it was slow-cooked, and together with the nasi lemak, the combination worked well.

If there was one thing I wanted to see improvement on, then I would’ve loved it if the roti pratha included even more roti, simply because it’d be common pratice to eat it in relatively larger quantities. Otherwise, everything was just great. Even if the menu was huge, I couldn’t see a possibility of choosing a wrong dish, not only because Malaysian food is bomb in general, but also because the dishes all used the correct types and amount of seasoning to provide good flavor. I would gladly recommend this place to those looking for this cuisine type in Chicago.

FYI – Kapitan & Serai are the same shop.

As a Singaporean, I had to come by here to try the food.

However, I left disappointed. This isn’t a good representation of how our food tastes. It can be better. The texture, taste and consistency of the dishes weren’t great.

Hokkien Char Mee and Char kway Teow were decent and edible. You can enjoy a decent meal here but don’t leave thinking this is how Singaporean/Malaysian food tastes. It is and can be way better.

That being said, didn’t try the other dishes that were recommended so unfortunately can’t weigh in on those.

Staff were friendly and kind and it was a nice atmosphere with plenty of seats and space.

Serai and Kapitan are the same restaurant and I wish I could give a higher rating.

As a Singaporean who frequent to Malaysia for their food, this is not authentic to the taste of Malaysia. It’s also not affordable :/

What we got:
1. Char Kway Tiao 19USD
2. Hokkien Char Mee 17USD
3. Sambal chilli (didn’t know they charge that, it’s good tho!)

We wanted to order Teh Tarik but after trying the food we decided not to pay another 8USD. There are some Asian restaurants we would go back to in Chicago but sadly, this didn’t make it to the list. Great environment and service staff tho!

Wow Kapitan was so good! Went for the first time tonight and absolutely loved it. Had the Kapitan chicken – super flavorful and great portion size. Also got the Bubur Chacha for dessert and it was tremendous. Friend had the roti appetizer which was unreal. Full bar service and great for groups. Good prices. Truly a great experience and will be returning soon

Good Malaysian roti, chicken and shrimps. We got the five spice chicken which was very similar to popcorn chicken. We also got the lamb I think. Very spicy and flavorful place, they also had good drinks.

Hands down best Malaysian food I’ve had outside of Malaysia! We ordered the nasi lemak beef rendang and the chee cheong fun. The aroma and taste is so authentic, couldn’t help but dig right in! Only thing is no utensils were given in the delivery order.

Eating Malaysian food after a long time. The roti canai, nyonya chap chye, and kaya toast were absolutely delicious. Plenty of vegetarian options.

The food here was amazing. More people need to know about this restaurant. We tried several dishes and nearly all were spectacular.

Burger: friend got this and it was so flavor and loved the addition of the omelette.

Beef rendang: 10/10. Would get this again.

Shrimp and asparagus samba(?): this was my favorite. A lot of flavor and spice packed into the dish.

Hainanese chicken: honestly I’d pass on this dish. It was ok but I’d go for the other dishes!

Not pictured but were standouts: chicken satay and pork belly appetizers. A must get!

Ordered for delivery on a cold February night – everything came fast and hot, and the food was incredible. We got a couple of satays, the nasi lemak, and a few curry dishes, and the hokkien noodles. Well spiced and super flavorful with generous portions, perfect for a winter night. Highly recommend, we’ll be back.
